Eric Gallo just wanted to spend a little more time on the field at Lane Stadium.

Saturday was senior day for Virginia Tech. Gallo, a three-year starter at center, and his teammates eked out a 20-14 win over Pittsburgh. After the win, Gallo’s last in Blacksburg, he just couldn’t bring himself to leave the field.

These pictures from the VT Twitter account — taken over an hour after the game — tell the story:

That’s pretty special.

Senior day is always an emotional day, no matter the sport. The fact that the Hokies won on a dramatic goal line stand probably brought things to a new level.

Virginia Tech took a 20-14 lead with 6:23 left in the fourth quarter but the Panthers had a chance to win the game in the final minute. Pitt advanced all the way to the 1-yard line and had four tries to score. The Hokies stuffed Pitt running back Darrin Hall twice on runs, broke up a Kenny Pickett pass attempt and stopped Hall for a third time on fourth down to seal the win.

That’s a pretty good way to win on senior day, huh?

The win improved Virginia Tech’s record to 8-3 on the year heading into the finale against rival Virginia on Friday night in Charlottesville.
