Video shows Patrick Mahomes shoot down talk from Andy Reid about leaving game

It never crossed Patrick Mahomes’ mind to stay out of Monday’s game after injuring his ankle.

Thankfully for Chiefs fans, it wasn’t déjà vu all over again Monday in KC’s win over the Buccaneers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

During a divisional playoff victory against the Jaguars in 2023, Mahomes’ ankle was injured and he had to leave the game to get it examined by team doctors. As you might recall, Mahomes pleaded with coach Andy Reid to stay in the game.

Here is the PG version of that exchange that Mahomes lost.

In the second half of the Chiefs’ 30-24 win over the Buccaneers on Monday, Mahomes suffered another ankle injury. He went into the blue medical tent and returned to the sideline a short while later.

Fortunately this injury wasn’t serious. But Reid asked if Mahomes if he need to leave the game.

“I thought he was joking,” Mahomes told reporters after the game. “He said it and I was like, ‘Come on. We’re not doing this again.’ He trusts me and once the doctors checked it out and I was able to get back and do the drops again, he let me get back on the field.”

The NFL shared a mic’d-up video of that exchange between Mahomes and Reid. Mahomes never entertained the thought of leaving the game.
