Video: Milan legends celebrate club’s 125th anniversary
Milan marked the 125th anniversary of the club’s foundation this evening by welcoming legends like Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Franco Baresi, Pippo Inzaghi and more onto the San Siro turf holding their trophies.
The ceremony preceded tonight’s Serie A match against Genoa and started with a man representing founder Herbert Kilpin carrying a vintage football, handing it over to a little girl, who in turn gave it to a representative of the current youth squad.
As a trio of DJs set the musical scene and dancers with glow sticks formed the number 125, a parade of glorious legends walked out carrying some of the silverware won by this team over the last Century.
They included the Dutch trio of Van Basten, Gullit and Rijkaard with the European Cup.
Others who paraded around the logo were Franco Baresi, Pippo Inzaghi, Roberto Donadoni, Massimo Ambrosini, Demetrio Albertini, Alexandre Pato, Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf, Christian Abbiati, Pietro Paolo Virdis, Filippo Galli, Alberico Evani, Mauro Tassotti, Alessandro Costacurta, Serginho, Marek Jankulovski, Cristian Brocchi, Cristian Zaccardo, Stefano Eranio, Riccardo Montolivo, Dario Simic, Martin Laursen, Giovanni Galli, Marco Borriello and Massimo Oddo.
However, it wasn’t entirely a celebration, because there was also a banner in the Curva Sud that sent a pointed message.
‘We honour our champions, those symbols of a Milan that no longer exists.’
Andriy Shevchenko was unable to attend due to personal reasons, while Paolo Maldini declined his invitation.
The Rossoneri players tonight are also wearing special edition kits referencing the one worn 125 years ago.
