Victor Osimhen transfer clause puts Premier League clubs on alert

Victor Osimhen could land himself a move to a top Premier League club in the January transfer window after agreeing a new release clause with Napoli.

The Nigeria international was exiled from the squad after failing to procure a move away from Naples before deadline day, leading to a surprise season-long loan move to Galatasaray over the weekend.

The Turkish outfit did not pay a loan fee for the striker, but they are covering his full salary for the duration of his stay in Istanbul.

Osimhen could be out of there as soon as January, though, following two key changes to his contract.

Napoli lowered the player’s release clause from €130 million (£109.5m) to €75m (£63.2m), and they can also extend the striker’s contract to 2027 should he not be sold next summer, according to Sky Sport Italia.

Osimhen has also requested that a break clause be inserted into the deal, allowing him to leave Turkey should any of Europe’s biggest club come in for him in January.

Additionally, Turkish outlet A Spor claim that only ten clubs, which does not include Galatasaray, can activate the new clause.

Turkish reporter Kagan Dursun, who says the number of clubs is actually eight, claims that Osimhen named his desired teams, which apparently includes Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Chelsea tried to sign the 25-year-old before the window closed last Friday, with The Athletic claiming they “explored up to seven different structures of a pay deal … without success”.

Liverpool also made a late bid to sign Osimhen last week, but were put off by the player’s wage demands, according to Corriere dello Sport.

Manchester United were linked with the centre-forward in January.
