Victor Boniface on his celebration against Hoffenheim: “I promised him I would celebrate like that, I just hadn’t scored yet.”
Speaking after Bayer Leverkusen’s 4-1 win against Hoffenheim, Victor Boniface, who scored twice commented on his unusual celebration for the first goal.
Following his first goal in the 30th minute against Hoffenheim to make it 2-0, the Nigerian would then run to the away end and pull his shorts down. On the celebration, Boniface said:
“I didn’t want to provoke anyone, I did it in front of our fans. It’s a TikTok trend from a big influencer in Nigeria. I promised him I would celebrate like that, I just hadn’t scored yet.”
Boniface would then score again in the 75th minute to make it 4-1 to Leverkusen and rounded off a great afternoon for the Nigerian who also assisted the opening goal for Martin Terrier.
Last season, Boniface had a very good first half of the season but following his injury at the start of the Africa Cup of Nations, he never looked like the same player as he seemed to be off the pace fitness-wise. However, the break has finally allowed him to reach his previous levels and his performance against Hoffenheim looked like he was back to the old Boniface.
Leverkusen’s next fixtures will be against Feyenoord in Rotterdam in their opening game of the Champions League on Thursday before hosting Wolfsburg next Sunday.
