Vancouver Canucks Place Defenceman Mark Friedman On Waivers

A day after revealing their 2024-25 opening night roster, the Vancouver Canucks have place defenceman Mark Friedman on waivers. If cleared, the 28-year-old will be assigned to the Abbotsford Canucks in the AHL. Last season with the Canucks, Friedman played 23 games, collecting one assist while averaging 12:14 of ice time.

While Friedman's placement on waivers is not unexpected, the timing of the move is. As mentioned, teams submitted their opening night rosters yesterday, with Fridman appearing on Vancouver's 23-player lineup. In total, four players were placed on waivers across the NHL, with the other three being Mackenzie Entwistle, Chris Driedger and Raphael Lavoie.

If Friedman does make it through waivers, he will add to an already crowded blue line in Abbotsford. The AHL Canucks could open their 2024-25 season with ten defenders listed on the roster, which would include plenty of experienced players in Christian Wolanin, Guillaume Brisebois, Jett Woo and Erik Brännström. This depth should lead to plenty of healthy competition as well as plenty of options for Vancouver when injuries hit. Abbotsford is set to open their 2024-25 campaign on Friday, October 11, when they head to Calgary to face the Wranglers.
