USA vs. Germany Olympic women's basketball: Team USA locks up final pool play game with decisive 87-68 win

Jackie Young had a standout game, scoring 19 points as the U.S. extends its win streak to 58 games on the way to an eighth straight gold medal

Coming off a game that was perhaps closer than Team USA would have liked, the women's national basketball team took care of business against Germany, finishing group play with an 87-68 win. The U.S., which had already advanced to the knockout round, will now do so at the top of the group with a perfect 3-0 in pool play.

Despite yet another slow start and trailing early against Germany, Team USA roared back, holding Germany to only 10 points in the second quarter. The U.S. stretched the lead through the second half, fending off any chance of a German comeback.

Jackie Young led the U.S. with 19 points off the bench, making five 3-pointers. A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart, who have led the team in scoring so far, finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Two-time WNBA All-Star Satou Sabally led Team Germany with 15 points, with Alexis Peterson adding 14. Germany (2-1) had already qualified for the quarterfinals but will now be in slightly less-favorable position with the result.

The United States and Germany will now advance to the knockout round, with their opponents still to be determined.

    Team USA 87, Germany 68

The United States cruises to another strong win in pool play, defeating Germany by 19 points in their final game before the knockout round.

Jackie Young had a standout game with 19 points off the bench, while team point leaders A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart ended with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

  • A dominant performance from Jackie Young, who not only had 19 points but racked up four steals, being a crucial part of the United States defense.

  • With just two minutes left, the U.S. is up 85-64, with Germany cutting into the United States' lead with an Alexis Peterson three-pointer and a Luisa Geiselsoder and-one. The result is just about locked up, but if Germany can hold on to cut into the point differential, it will give them a more favorable position in the knockout round.

  • Kahleah Copper gets back-to-back three-pointers and is now 3-for-3 from three. USA 83, Germany 56.

  • Brittny Griner gets a big block and gets the ball to the other end of the court, where Jackie Young scores a three-pointer...followed by another three just moments later. Young is 5-for-8 from three, and has a team-high 17 points so far.

The United States now has a 25-point lead with just under six minutes left.

  • Kelsey Plum and A'ja Wilson pull off a great sequence, with Wilson setting a great screen, Plum sending her a great pocket pass and Wilson following it up with the shot.

That basket, plus a pair of three-pointers from Jackie Young and a spin cycle from Alyssa Thomas, gives the United States a 69-46 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Young's second three is a magnificent buzzer-beater, as the U.S. heads into the fourth looking extra dominant.

  • Brittney Griner, who has also had a low-scoring day, gets two back-to-back baskets with a jumper and a fast break layup. 59-43, United States.

Germany's Leonie Fiebich collides with Alyssa Thomas and gets her right leg rolled under her; she is helped off the court and replaced by Satou Sabally. Fiebich has the second-most points on the team so far, and will be a big blow for Germany.

  • Kelsey Plum, who has struggled to score so far, gets her first points of the game with a beautiful three-pointer off a great dime from Jackie Young, and then gets a huge layup under pressure for an and-one. Team USA has readjusted after a hot Germany start, and is up 54-41 with three and a half minutes remaining in the quarter.

  • But don't count out Germany yet: Frieda Buhner gets a huge three and Germany is back within ten points of the U.S. Team USA 49, Germany 39.

  • Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart put up two big baskets off the glass, and A'ja Wilson steals the ball and goes coast-to-coast for another two points. The U.S. is now at 49-36, and will hope to keep building their lead.

  • The second half is underway, with Alexis Peterson getting an early steal and fast break layup for Germany. Satou Sabally scores three-pointer to bring the score to 41-34 within the first minute. Germany came out strong, and the U.S. looks a bit caught off-guard.

  • After a slow start, the U.S. has built a solid lead against Germany with a pretty even distribution of points. Breanna Stewart and A'ja Wilson, who've lead the U.S. in scoring for every game so far, currently lead with 11 points and eight points, respectively. The U.S. has 18 bench points, compared to Germany's three — a classic example of the United States' deep bench.

Shooting issues aside, Team USA has done a good job taking advantage of Germany's turnovers — the Germans have 15 turnovers, and the U.S. has scored 14 points off of them.

  • Team USA 41, Germany 29 at haltime

Despite the early struggles, the U.S. is now up to a double-digit lead, leading Germany 41-29 heading into the half. An 11-0 run in the middle of the quarter really boosted the team after Germany had a lead as high as nine points in the first quarter.

But both teams are struggling to score, missing several key shots. Germany only scored 10 points in the second quarter; the U.S. scored 25, but is now 2-for-10 on threes.

  • Jackie Young gives the U.S. momentum with back-to-back points, hitting a long two and then stealing for a fast break layup from Breanna Stewart. Germany takes a timeout as Team USA goes up 32-24.

  • Alyssa Thomas scores a tricky layup to give the United States its first lead of the game. Team USA is now up 24-22 with a little over six minutes left in the half.

  • A huge Kahleah Copper three ties the game again at 22-all, and forces Germany to take a timeout.

  • Jackie Young makes the United States' first three-pointer and ties the game at 19-all, but a few misses gives Germany's Emily Bessoir a chance for the and-one to retake the lead.

  • The U.S. has started pushing back, tightening Germany's lead to 19-16 as the first quarter ends. Both teams went scoreless for the final two minutes of the quarter, with the only points being a pair of free throws from Sabrina Ionescu.

Team USA is struggling to score three-pointers, going 0-for-3 from beyond the arc in something that has become an unfortunate trend. Germany, meanwhile, was up by as many as nine points but will now have to fend off a surging United States in the final three frames.

  • Germany has built up an early lead, going up 15-6 with just over five minutes left in the quarter. A steal and fast break from Leonie Fiebich forces Team USA to take a timeout.

  • And we're off! Germany strikes first with a three-pointer from Leonie Fiebich, but Breanna Stewart gets the U.S.'s first points with a jumper in the paint. It's 5-2 Germany to start after the first few minutes.

  • USA's starting lineup

The U.S. is sticking with their starts, going with Diana Taurasi, A'ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier and Chelsea Gray to get things started.

Germany starts with Satou Sabally, Leonie Fiebich, Alexis Peterson, Marie Guelich and Luisa Geiselsoder.
