US Open golf 2022 LIVE: Second round scores and latest updates as Rory McIlroy fights back up leaderboard

The cream rose to the top on day two of the US Open as a quartet of major champions defied predictions of Brookline turning “nasty”.

Open champion Collin Morikawa led the way on five under par after a superb second round of 66 and was later joined by Joel Dahmen at that mark, with reigning US Open champion Jon Rahm and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy a shot behind.

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler was part of the group another stroke back, with England’s Matt Fitzpatrick three off the pace on two under.

McIlroy had been in danger of falling out of contention when he covered the front nine in 36, the world number three needing three attempts to hack on to the green from thick rough on the third, before holing from 23 feet to salvage a double bogey.

But after dropping a shot on the 10th, McIlroy picked up shots on the 12th, 14th and 17th to remain firmly in the hunt for his fifth major title and first since the 2014 US PGA.

That’s a great save from Dahmen at 16. He missed the green and his ball sat down in the second cut at the par-3 16th. His chip gives him a chance but it’s a great 10ft putt to escape with his par. He keeps a share of the lead at -5.

There’s a bit of fortune for Wise, whose chip out of the left rough at 17 hits the flagstick and stops dead right next to the hole. There’s a wry smile from the American because that ball was travelling fast and was likely rolling over the back of the green. Instead, it’s a tap-in birdie and he joins the group at -4.

McIlroy rolls his birdie putt quite a way past the hole and that leaves a nervy one back up the hill. He holes it nicely though and that’s a great round of 69 considering the disaster he had back on the third. He’s just one shot off the lead.

Schauffele misses way right off the tee at 18 but gets lucky as his ball settles in the grass that’s been trampled down by the spectators. He can’t take advantage though and his six-iron comes up way short and he looks away in disgust.

Now it’s McIlory’s turn. He can’t get close as he hits straight into the sun but it’s in the heart of the green. It’s been a great fightback from the Northern Irishman.

Elsewhere, Keegan Bradley’s sensational charge that featured six birdies in eight holes is halted by a bogey at 15.

David Lingmerth, who held the lead at one stage this afternoon, ends with a sorry three-putt that sees him drop back to -1.

A fantastic birdie from McIlroy at 17! He judged the spin well on that 100-yard approach and then gets a huge roar from the crowd after a fine putt. He’s just one off the lead and what a leaderboard it is shaping up to be. Morikawa gets up and down for par to complete a brilliant round of 66 and take the clubhouse lead at -5. Rahm so nearly holes a 30ft putt for birdie but is still all smiles after a round of 67.

McIlroy gets out of 16 with a par after a fine two-putt. He then stripes a long iron down the 17th fairway and that’ll set up a great chance to attack the flag with a wedge.

Over at 9, which is Morikawa’s final hole of the day, our leader fats his approach and comes up well short of the green. Rahm finds the putting surface but it’ll require some effort to make birdie from there.

That’s a big miss from Morikawa, who pulls his 4ft eagle putt. The birdie tap-in is no problem but that what a chance to put some clear air between himself in the pack. Instead, his outright lead is just one.

That position is likely to change in a second though! After a steady streak of three pars, Morikawa bursts back into life with a sensational 208-yard second into the par-5 8th. It stops just 4ft from the hole and that eagle chance could push him two shots clear.

Dahmen’s approach just dribbled into the rough at 12 and he fluffed his chip, which pulls up way short. That’s a clutch par putt from 10ft though to ensure he stays at the top of the leaderboard.

Tarren is back in the clubhouse with a 72. He’ll be disappointed, having held the lead earlier this afternoon but he just missed far too many short putts to sustain his charge. Even then, he’ll be delighted to make it through to the weekend.

Schauffele is putting a nice run together on the back-nine. After birdies at 11 and 13, he hits a brilliant approach into the 14th that stays on the bottom tier, unlike McIlroy’s effort. He’s eyeing up the eagle chance but is forced to settle for birdie. The American, who has never finished worse than 7th at the US Open, moves to -1.

McIlroy makes the green in two at the par-5 14th but the ball rolls up unto the second tier and he’s left with a very tricky downhill putt that’s almost 60ft in length. He judges the weight inch-perfectly though. The line however was off and the ball stops agonisingly close to the left lip of the hole. Still, that’s a birdie and the Northern Irishman is just one back of the lead now. After that early double bogey, it’s been a great fightback.

Dahmen can’t get up and down after his approach found the greenside bunker at 10 and he’s a little clumsy out of the sand, leaving himself a long par attempt. It’s not a bad putt but that’s still a shot dropped and he and Morikawa now share the lead at -4. The field is so bunched heading into the weekend.

Dahmen is facing a tricky up and down at the 10th after missing the green left.

Meanwhile, Harman has faltered badly with a double bogey at the 13th. His drive drifted right and his second was no less directionally challenged. His next effort got caught up in the fescue that lines the greenside bunker, leaving him a horrific lie and stance and his awkward chip sailed into the fringe on the other side. A good up and down limits the damage to two shots and he’s now back at -2.

There’s no problem finding the cup for Scottie Scheffler though! It’s been a quiet day for the world No 1, who made two birdies on the front before recovering to get back to level. But he’s shooting up the leaderboard now after a chip-in eagle out of the rough at the par-5 14th.

Brooks Koepka is in the same group and made the green in two with a spectacular approach and he follows Scheffler in for an eagle of his own.

Daffue compounds that error with a slice off the tee at 15 that nestles down in the rough.

Fitzpatrick has unfortunately dropped a shot too at the par-3 2nd, which is playing 217 yards this afternoon and has ranked as the hardest hole on the course. His tee shot came up short and right of the green and he can’t get up and down.

Now Daffue shows some frustration. He decelerated on his chip and his ball comes up short and sticks in the rough just off the fringe. He opts to go for a bump and run at the next attempt but it’s a little heavy handed. He berates himself before standing over a tricky sliding putt to save par and then leaves it low of the hole. His lead is reduced to one.

Another decent birdie putt drifts low of the hole for Fitzpatrick.

Daffue is in a spot of bother again at the behemoth par-5 14th. His drive ended up left and finishes on some cement in the spectator area. Rather than lay up sensibly though, he pulls out a 3-wood and goes for the green. You’ve got to admire the optimism. The reality isn’t quite as pretty and his ball nestles down in some thick rough left of the green after clipping a tree.

The pressure of being the leader has had little impact on MJ Daffue. After pulling his approach into the rough left of the 12th green, he opens the face on a lob wedge and judges his chip to perfection. That’s a tap-in to save par and the South African still has a two-shot lead after Fitzpatrick missed his birdie chance.

Sam Burns already has two PGA Tour wins this season and he put together an excellent front-nine, going out in just 32 to move towards the top of the leaderboard. He has just undone much of that hard work, though.

He pulled his drive way left at the 10th, couldn’t find the green and then chipped out of the heavy rough straight into the bunker over the back. He can’t get up and down from there and that’s a double bogey that sees him drop back to level par for the tournament.

Justin Thomas endured a dreadful start to his second round, dropping three shots in his opening two holes, but he makes a better start to his back-nine with a birdie. That gets him back to level for the tournament and he’s by no means out of this yet.

Elsewhere, Fitzpatrick matches his perfect drive down the 18th with a fine approach and will have a good chance to close the gap at the top.

Webb Simpson reeling, this is the US Open: 35 feet from the hole in two, he ended up needing EIGHT strokes.

JT with a par, looking to just find his legs so to speak, his +3 start, with two sixes, is like a boxer dazed by a flash knockdown. He’s +2 overall for the tournament, so no need to panic for the PGA Championship champion.

Sergio Garcia is living on the edge... One over today and +5 for the tournament, he needs a good back nine (which will be the front for him after starting on 10) to make it for the weekend.
