Unrivaled team rosters ranked, from sneaky good to title contenders
The Unrivaled team rosters are here, and oh, baby. These things are SUPERB.
Anytime WNBA players are involved, there's bound to be some fantastic hoops played, and Unrivaled is shaping up to be no different. The new organization revealed the rosters for the league's six teams, and these things run the gamut from sneaky good to "Give them the championship, now!"
So, you know I had to get involved and give my totally-expert-but-clearly-super-biased opinion on how the roster talent should be ranked. May the odds be ever in your team's favor.
Here’s my ranking of all six new teams:
This story has been updated to include roster changes made after the initial publishing.
6. Phantom BC
Roster: Marina Mabrey, Satou Sabally, Brittney Griner, Natasha Cloud, Katie Lou Samuelson, Sabrina Ionescu
Phantom BC is a wild team. They might put up the most 3-pointers in the league, and I'm not kidding. Between Natasha Cloud, Marina Mabrey and Sabrina Ionescu, it's like asking, "Do you want to be shot out of the gym here or from the logo? Which is better for you?" It's nearly impossible to defend that. Don't even try. Just hope for the best.
Then, here comes Brittney Griner to drop 2-pointers all over the court. How is that even fair? Say what now? MADNESS.
5. Lunar Owls BC
Roster: Skylar Diggins-Smith, Allisha Gray, Napheesa Collier, Courtney Williams, Cameron Brink, Shakira Austin
I refuse to count out any team with Napheesa Collier leading it because, as we saw in the WNBA Finals, THEY JUST DON'T QUIT. How good will this team be?
Phee is a Team USA gold medalist and a nasty defender. Allisha Gray is a 3x3 Gold medalist and an underrated defender. And that's before you get to SDS, Courtney Williams, and Shakira Austin, who also can defend and drop points. Did I mention there's also Cameron Brink, a FIBA 3x3 World Cup gold medalist?
This squad is sneakily loaded.
4. Rose BC
Roster: Chelsea Gray, Kahleah Copper, Angel Reese, Brittney Sykes, Lexie Hull, Azurá Stevens
Alright now. This is a sneaky good squad. Having Chelsea Gray, the point gawd, leading is already a good start and adding the bucket slayer, Kahleah Copper, has my attention.
But then you have the rebounding queen Angel Reese, who will save a ton of possessions, and that changes things. Add in a little Brittany Sykes and Lexie Hull for additional defense and buckets, and whewwww. TOUGH. Azurá Stevens is a nice, pretty bow to bring it all home.
3. Vinyl BC
Roster: Arike Ogunbowale, Rhyne Howard, Aliyah Boston, Jordin Canada, Rae Burrell, Dearica Hamby
BUCKETS. BUCKETS. BUCKETS.
Vinyl has a serious advantage because it's got nothing but shooters on it, and that's going to be a problem. Arike and Rhyne will torture teams from behind the arc, and Dearica and Aliyah will bully them inside. WOOOOOO.
As if that wasn't enough, Dearica and Rhyne also won 3x3 bronze this summer in Paris, giving them a serious leg up on just how strenuous 3x3 basketball is. This team's conditioning will be immaculate.
2. Laces BC
Roster: Jackie Young, Tiffany Hayes, Kayla McBride, Alyssa Thomas, Kate Martin, Stefanie Dolson
Let's call the Laces "L'Aces" because this Las Vegas reunion will pay dividends as Kate Martin gets one last chance to play with Jackie Young and Tiffany Hayes. The on-court chemistry will be immediately evident.
Looking at the rest of the roster, it also seems a bit daunting. Because in what kind of world will it be fair to choose between Alyssa Thomas or Kayla McBride shredding up your defense? I would QUIT. GIVE ME THE BALL; I'M GOING HOME.
And when you think you've had enough, Stefanie Dolson, a 3x3 gold medalist, will politely ask you to move out of the way for more buckets.
1. Mist BC
Roster: Jewell Loyd, DiJonai Carrington, Breanna Stewart, Courtney Vandersloot, Rickea Jackson, Aaliyah Edwards
WHAT SORCERY IS THIS?! I fully expect a ton of blocks, steals, and broken ankles from Stewie and DiJonai, as well as just a barrage of midrange chaos from Rickea and Jewell. MOVE OUT THE WAYYYYYY.
And just when you think that's enough, the 3-ball will come raining on your head top from nearly the whole squad. I really shutter to think about the other teams having to defend this. I'm so sorry in advance. GOOD LUCK.
