Ukraine vs England LIVE!

England hit a rare bump on the road to next year's Euro 2024 as Kyle Walker's first international goal secured Gareth Southgate's side a 1-1 draw against Ukraine in Poland.

Having opened Group C with four wins from as many matches, it has long looked a case of when rather than if the Euro 2020 runners-up seal their place at next summer's tournament in Germany.

England had won 21 of their previous 22 Euros qualifiers but had to make do with a point on Saturday evening having failed to build on Walker brilliantly cancelling out Oleksandr Zinchenko's opener.

Huge celebrations from Ukraine fans

18:54 , Marc Mayo

A determined display and a valuable point for Ukraine in south-west Poland tonight, where they’ve been backed to the hilt.

They are still to face Italy twice in what will likely determine their fate in qualifying for Euro 2024 out of Group C.

Ukraine 1-1 England | FULL TIME!

18:51 , Marc Mayo

England win a late, late corner but the whistle blows! It’s a draw in Wroclaw.

Jordan Henderson is mystified that that corner wasn’t allowed to be taken, and he has a point.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 90+4 mins

18:50 , Marc Mayo

Conor Gallagher aims a shot from distance after collecting a bouncing ball. Blocked.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 90+3 mins

18:49 , Marc Mayo

Still rather disjointed from England as they look to launch a final assault for all three points.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 90 mins

18:46 , Marc Mayo

That’ll do for Mykhailo Mudryk, another underwhelming display for his logbook. Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Yehor Nazaryna is on in his place.

The board goes up for four minutes of injury time.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 89 mins

18:45 , Marc Mayo

Mykhailo Mudryk floored with cramp after once again seeing Kyle Walker race back to deal with his breakaway.

Up the other end, Phil Foden runs into a blind alley and England have to settle for a throw.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 86 mins

18:42 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Marcus Rashford thumps in a free-kick from a tight angle which has to be flapped clear, before England return the ball towards Harry Maguire at the far post.

His poke is parried away and Declan Rice wants a penalty... nothing doing and he is booked for protesting.

Conor Gallagher on for Bukayo Saka.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 82 mins

18:38 , Marc Mayo

Stonking work from Kyle Walker, who simply guides Mykhailo Mudryk into touch to win a goal kick at roughly 150mph.

The world’s best right-back. Dont’t @ me.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 81 mins

18:37 , Marc Mayo

A really good atmosphere in Stadion Wroclaw as the final ten minutes begin, the Polish city has put on a real Ukrainian display tonight just as it did for Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight contest with Daniel Dubois last month.

It’s not the reason England have struggled though, they just seem a bit laboured in attack with a lack of spark and fluency.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 76 mins

18:33 , Marc Mayo

Another change for Ukraine as Oleksandr Zinchenko departs. He rallies the crowd after a standing ovation as Vitaliy Buyalskyi arrives on the scene.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 75 mins

18:31 , Marc Mayo

Not quite happening here for England, Marcus Rashford failing to find Harry Kane with a quick ball into feet.

It won’t be a terrible point for the Three Lions if it ends 1-1 but they’ve hardly shown that they want it more. Going into the final knockings, that’s a dangerous position to be in.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 72 mins

18:29 , Marc Mayo

Not a bad corner swung in towards the far post, but Harry Maguire can’t generate power behind his header. On target but grabbed by the goalkeeper.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 70 mins

18:27 , Marc Mayo

Ukraine have gotten back into the game since the changes, and win a corner after good work down the right.

A dangerous run to the near post is dealt with and England break after a fine Marcus Rashford tackle.

Harry Kane’s low ball in wins an England corner!

Dan Kilpatrick in Wroclaw

18:24 , Marc Mayo

Maddison cut a frustrated figure as he trudged off, having faded following a bright start. He’ll feel he can do better and know that the fierce competition in this England squad means you have to take your chances when they come.

Highlights: Bukayo Saka hits the bar

18:23 , Marc Mayo

Ukraine 1-1 England | 65 mins

18:22 , Marc Mayo

Ukraine subs. Roman Yaremchuk off for Artem Dovbyk up front and Serhiy Sydorchuk replaces Heorhiy Sudakov.

England also make a pair of moves, Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden unsurprisingly the ones turned to with Jude Bellingham and James Maddison off.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 63 mins

18:19 , Marc Mayo

Big shout from Bukayo Saka as his shot is blocked... was it handball?

VAR says no as we play on.

It did hit Serhiy Kryvtsov’s arm, replays show, but it was a natural position as he slid on. Right call.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 61 mins

18:18 , Marc Mayo

That was, indeed, an immaculate hand from Heorhiy Bushchan to turn Bukayo Saka’s effort onto the bar.

England’s best moment of the half, who are dominating possession once again.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 59 mins

18:16 , Marc Mayo

OFF THE BAR!

Who was just saying Bukayo Saka should be taken off? No, can’t remember either...

The winger has time in the D to cut inside and thump the woodwork with a shot. It might have been a great save, you know.

Dan Kilpatrick in Wroclaw

18:14 , Marc Mayo

Foden and Rashford are among the players warming up, with Southgate surely thinking about changes as the hour-mark approaches.

Saka has been quiet while Maddison has faded a little after a bright start, perhaps because Kane has been dropping deeper.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 57 mins

18:13 , Marc Mayo

You wonder how long Gareth Southgate will give it before unleashing Marcus Rashford, Phil Foden, Eberechi Eze or Conor Gallagher off the bench.

Bukayo Saka would be one player who couldn’t argue at being substituted. James Maddison hasn’t done much better this half, either.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 54 mins

18:10 , Marc Mayo

Better from the visitors as Jordan Henderson overlaps and sees a cross earn a corner, with not quite enough men in the middle to aim at.

The corner is sliced goalwards by Harry Maguire before Ukraine clear.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 52 mins

18:08 , Marc Mayo

Half chance from England taking a free-kick short, Kyle Walker lofting a cross towards Harry Maguire.

It’s a tough one as he leans back and the header goes over.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 48 mins

18:04 , Marc Mayo

First attempt of the half sees a header skew off Jude Bellingham for the goalkeeper to collect.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 47 mins

18:03 , Marc Mayo

Ukraine with the ball early on as England refuse to chase the ball and leave gaps in behind.

Marc Guehi does a good job to secure possession from a long pass forward.

Ukraine 1-1 England | Kick-off!

18:02 , Marc Mayo

Time for the second half in Wroclaw, Serhiy Kryvstov on for Mykola Matviyenko in a change for Ukraine’s defence.

Work for Ukraine to do

17:57 , Marc Mayo

A point would still be very decent for Ukraine, who had only one shot and 30 per cent of the ball in that half.

They need just a little more fluency on the ball and to attack England’s wings more, with Mykhailo Mudryk’s pace nullified so far.

Time for England to press on

17:55 , Marc Mayo

It was a pretty solid showing from England, bar the middle third of that half when Ukraine scored.

They’ve dominated the ball comfortably and need to gamble a bit more with some extra impetus in their attack if they want to make this a more comfortable outing.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 45 mins

Jordan Pickford off his line well to cover Mykhailo Mudryk’s rocket-like pace to chase Oleksandr Zinchenko’s ball over the top.

One minute added on as Harry Kane loops a header wide down the other end.

Dan Kilpatrick in Wroclaw

17:44 , Marc Mayo

And that, again, is another reason why Harry Kane should not just stay up front. England have been second best but the captain carved them open with one moment of quality from deep.

The timing of Walker’s run was perfect and he kept his cool in the box.

Ukraine 1-1 England | 43 mins

17:44 , Marc Mayo

Roman Yaremchuk booked for a lunge after the restart.

England are set to be heading into the break level and with the momentum after that stunning assist from Harry Kane and calm finish by Kyle Walker.

It was about time someone gambled with a run into the box like that.

Ukraine 1-0 England | 33 mins

17:34 , Marc Mayo

Safe to say Ukraine’s goal came from their only attack of the game and England have responded by asserting their dominance in possession.

Not much cutting edge in the final third though, no real final ball or creativity.

Dan Kilpatrick in Wroclaw

17:30 , Marc Mayo

The noise in the stadium was deafening when Zinchenko finished a really slick move to open the scoring, the crowd sensing a famous victory in the offing.

England haven’t got going yet and are struggling with the intensity of the hosts.

Big test for England. They’ve not been behind in a game since the World Cup.

Jordan Henderson clips a shot over the bar after Bukayo Saka’s lay-off is just askew.

THE ARSENAL MAN SLOTS HOME!

Ukraine work it down the right and a low ball in evades the England defence for Oleksandr Zinchenko to finish! Wroclaw goes WILD!

Deserved for England, who have dropped off after early pressure yielded nothing serious.

Ukraine 0-0 England | 25 mins

17:25 , Marc Mayo

Another brief surge from Ukraine, Oleksandr Zinchenko overhitting a ball into the box as they finally get a foothold in the game.

England have dominated the early exchanges but now may rue failing to test the keeper.

Dan Kilpatrick in Wroclaw

17:22 , Marc Mayo

The decibels increase ten-fold whenever Ukraine manage to venture into England’s half, let alone look threatening. We may be hundreds of miles from Kyiv but this feels like home away from home for the Ukrainians.

Ukraine 0-0 England | 21 mins

17:22 , Marc Mayo

Good work by Kyle Walker to shepherd a dodgy Declan Rice touch back to Jordan Pickford with Mykhailo Mudryk lurking.

Ukraine getting a bit more interested yet not enough to allow England any chances on the counter.

As such, Taras Stepanenko is booked for a lunge on James Maddison. Got the ball but went right through the man from behind.

Ukraine 0-0 England | 19 mins

17:19 , Marc Mayo

It’s been an opening quarter or so of the game that England have dominated, with a mighty 85 per cent of possession as a Jude Bellingham ball in from deep is nodded back to the goalkeeper.

Dan Kilpatrick in Wroclaw

17:15 , Marc Mayo

Maddison is playing a free role here, much like he does for Spurs, dropping into space between the lines and allowing Bellingham to run beyond him.

The Real Madrid player, who has made a mixed start, has already popped up a couple of times in dangerous positions down the left.

Ukraine 0-0 England | 14 mins

17:14 , Marc Mayo

Taras Stepanenko throws in a good block as Bukayo Saka fires off England’s first shot from a Harry Kane cross that Ukraine fail to clear.

Jude Bellingham then gets into the box as England look to turn the pressure up on their hosts.

Ukraine 0-0 England | 11 mins

17:11 , Marc Mayo

The home crowd’s volume rises significantly as Ukraine get out of their half for the first time.

Not much treat on Jordan Pickford’s 18-yard box though, Bukayo Saka doing well to steal to ball back and win a throw.

Ukraine 0-0 England | 7 mins

17:07 , Marc Mayo

A few nice early touches from James Maddison, who is drifting around just like Bukayo Saka with England’s full-backs playing high up the pitch.

Jordan Henderson is also looking to get involved in an advanced role to the right of centre in this 4-3-3.

Dan Kilpatrick in Wroclaw

17:04 , Marc Mayo

The pitch is noticeably bobbly and has clearly been relaid haphazardly in places, likely a consequence of the Oleksandr Usyk fight here a couple of weeks ago. There have been a few heavy touches from the England defenders as they adjust.

Ukraine 0-0 England | 4 mins

17:04 , Marc Mayo

Early ball into Bukayo Saka darting down the left channel, Jude Bellingham leaving his marker for dead just outside the box.

His pass is overhit but that’s a nice little warning sign from England.

Ukraine 0-0 England | 1 min

17:01 , Marc Mayo

Harry Maguire on the right side of defence, contrary to his normal left-centre-back spot, with Marc Guehi alongside him.

James Maddison wide left and Bukayo Saka on the right in attack.

Gareth Southgate backs Jordan Henderson

16:54 , Marc Mayo

Gareth Southgate has ensured England fans Jordan Henderson is operating at his “normal level” ahead of facing Ukraine.

The England boss has just told Channel 4: “He has looked no different to how he always does, he’s started a lot of our last eight-nine matches including at the World Cup.

“His leadership at a tough away venue is important to us.

“I’ve spoken with him, as I was answering questions on his behalf and he understands everything. He understands the landscape and he’s totally focused on performing for England.”

To be fair, he won’t have forgotten how to play overnight but a whole season in Saudi may not be ideal pre-Euros...

Jude Bellingham has been simply immense for Real Madrid since heading over to Spain.

Today’s game is a great chance to continue to bring his club form over to England duty and a successful Euros next summer could well position him as the world’s top player.

Harry Kane would like that title, having started with a bang for Bayern Munich.

Big day for Marc Guehi

16:47 , Marc Mayo

Amid all the talk of Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Harry Maguire etc not much has been said of Marc Guehi.

Perhaps that is a mark of the Crystal Palace defender’s impressive rise, ahead of what will be his fifth England cap.

If he impresses having been part of that notorious 4-0 defeat to Hungary at Molineux, he will be the official first reserve in defence for Gareth Southgate... and maybe soon more.

Gareth Southgate explains Harry Maguire selection

16:44 , Marc Mayo

“He’s looked good. He’s training with top players every day.

“Obviously he got into the game the other day at a critical point, so as a defender that’s not ideal, but of course he’s a very experienced player and he’s looked very good in training.”

The Group C state of play

England will be cruising to top spot even if they drop points today, while North Macedonia and Italy face off this evening.

Lack of options the reason for Jordan Henderson’s inclusion

16:37 , Marc Mayo

Many have criticised Gareth Southgate for starting Jordan Henderson today, but who else would have played?

Conor Gallagher is hardly setting Chelsea alight and Kalvin Phillips is a bench option at Manchester City, with Mason Mount and Trent Alexander-Arnold injured.

Dan Kilpatrick surveyed the scene ahead of today’s game.

Andriy Shevchenko on Ukraine vs England: ‘This is about real friendship'

16:28 , Marc Mayo

Andriy Shevchenko has been speaking about Ukraine’s struggle amid Russia’s invasion, which is the backdrop of today’s game taking place in Poland.

“It’s very sad, even thinking about,” he tells Channel 4. “We’re still fighting and we’re going to stand and fight. Today I want to speak about something also very important, which is real friendship.

“I want to thank all English people for being real friends to Ukraine. In such a dark moment, you’re always looking for someone to give you a hand. England was one of the first countries to be close to us.

“This game reminds me of the game at Wembley [in March] and the support we had. This is more than a football game, it’s about support and solidarity.”

Will we see a Jordan Henderson protest?

16:19 , Marc Mayo

England supporters group Three Lions Pride have threatened to take a stand against Jordan Henderson’s move to Saudi Arabian club Ettifaq.

The former Liverpool midfielder has been criticised having previously talked up the LGBTQ+ community, only to now accept a wealthy living in a country where homosexuality is illegal.

Co-chair of the group, Joe White, told the Mirror: “Having spoken to some of our members, there was a real sense of disappointment. There was a question on whether people were intending to boo and the original intention was to try to focus on being supportive of the team.

“But if we wanted to make a stand, then turning our backs is quite a symbolic move, particularly given how the community has felt. Since his interview, that may well change. I would imagine people are more likely to boo or show an audible distaste.

“There are members attending who we've spoken to and told the position of the group, which is to turn backs. If they want to boo that's a personal decision. The issue with booing when you're part of the England fan movement, it could also turn other fans against you who might not know the reasons behind it.”

James Maddison out to make his mark

16:09 , Marc Mayo

James Maddison is back in the England XI and spoke in midweek about his World Cup experience.

The midfielder has finally broken into Gareth Southgate’s starting XI after spending his time in Qatar nursing a knee injury.

“Gareth said he knew it had been tough, but he was really impressed with the way I had carried myself round the group,” he said.

“Him putting his arm around me and saying that as we were leaving stuck with me.

“There was obviously a little bit of [resentment]. I remember being in my room after I got my knock and thinking, ‘Why now?’ But I absolutely loved being there.

“I think a younger version of myself would have been a bit more sulky, a bit more moody, a bit more moany. But I thought, you know what, I am at the World Cup for my country. That’s why I am hungry to be in the next one. I want that again - but I want to be playing this time.”

Key England issues: Lack of left-back options

15:44 , Marc Mayo

Gareth Southgate has made a habit of picking only one natural left-back in the squad — most recently Luke Shaw — but a long-term injury to the Manchester United defender has led to a recall for Ben Chilwell, who last started in the 2-0 win over Ukraine at Wembley in March.

Kieran Trippier, though, can deputise at left-back and is a Southgate favourite.

Key England issues: Kane, Saka and one more

15:39 , Marc Mayo

Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka have locked down two of the spots in Southgate’s front three, but left wing is still up for grabs.

With Jack Grealish having pulled out of the squad with injury for today’s match, the England manager is expected to pick between Marcus Rashford, Phil Foden and James Maddison, while Eberechi Eze can also play there.

My personal pick? Has to be Maddison.

Ben Chilwell hails Three Lions’ winning mentality

14:54 , Marc Mayo

Ben Chilwell believes England can beat anyone, as the Three Lions target the victory that will take them closer to qualifying for Euro 2024.

“I love coming here [to England’s training base at St George’s Park] — and we’d all say the same thing,” he said. “It is little things, like building culture and winning mentality over years and years.

“It’s about the day-to-day habits of turning up on time at the hotels, saying please and thank-yous to all the staff, doing everything right in the gym, doing everything right on the pitch.

“It all adds up to create the culture that we’ve built now — and it is a great place to come. We’re very confident, but there’s a difference between being over-confident and very confident.”
