A 31-year-old man has been charged in connection with the alleged racist harassment of former England international Ugo Monye at Exeter Chiefs last year.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed on Monday that Angus Beukes will be appear before Exeter Magistrates’ Court on July 24 charged with “racially/religiously aggravated harassment/alarm/distress by words/writing” after the incident on November 19 at Sandy Park.

Monye, 40, had been working at Exeter’s Premiership victory over Gloucester as part of TNT’s punditry team when the alleged encounter with Beukes occurred.

In a post on X, Monye wrote that he had experienced “the most blatant racism” he had seen from a supporter at a live game, which occurred while he was departing Sandy Park.

“One supporter running through crowd starts shouting ‘n---a, n---a’, disgraceful, the former Harlequins, England and Lions wing wrote.

“Not a single person said a word, challenged or even reported it.

“He walks off after a mild scuffle and fans are now telling me, ‘We’re with you’. B-------s you’re with me… [I’m] so fed up.”

Exeter Chiefs apologised to Monye at the time and said that the incident had been captured on CCTV and passed onto Devon and Cornwall Police.

“Angus Beukes, aged 31, has been summonsed to appear before Exeter Magistrates’ Court on 24 July 2024 where he will be charged with racially/religiously aggravated harassment/alarm/distress by words/writing,” read a statement from Devon and Cornwall Police.

“The charge relates to an incident on Sunday 19 November 2023 in Sandy Park Way, Exeter.

“We must now respect the court process and would ask that members of the public do not risk prejudicing these proceedings by speculating on social media.”
