UFC 297: Dricus Du Plessis wins split decision over Sean Strickland to claim middleweight title
Dricus Du Plessis did just enough to edge Sean Strickland via split decision Saturday night to claim the middleweight title at UFC 297 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.
Du Plessis pressed the action throughout the fight and rarely took a step back. Strickland was effective with his jab early, but that waned as the fight wore on. As Du Plessis got more comfortable, he began to find his range, and his blitzes against Strickland became more effective.

Both men were marked up, with Du Plessis' left eye being almost swollen shut and Strickland, who won the title by winning a decision over Israel Adesanya at UFC 293 in September, having some bad cuts on the left side of his face.
Du Plessis, coming off a knockout of former champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 290, also mixed in some timely takedowns throughout. There were questions about his gas tank entering the fight, but all those questions were answered in the five-round contest, which Du Plessis won by scores of 47-48, 48-47 and 48-47.
After the bout, Du Plessis called out Adesanya, with whom Du Plessis has had some issues.

This one is going to be close. I can see 48-47 in either direction. As close on paper as we had imagined.

Absolutely grueling affair from Sean Strickland and Dricus du Plessis. Great fight. I have this 3-2 DDP but several of these rounds were close. How you scoring? #UFC297

Terrific fight. Close close fifth round. I think DDP wins it 48-47 #UFC297

Slight lean Strickland in the 5th and I have it 48-47 Dricus.
Close fight and I'm eager to see how it's scored.— Aaron Bronsteter (@aaronbronsteter) January 21, 2024
Du Plessis still stalking forward with power in round 5. Strickland looking to drive him back but only seems to do it in short bursts. #UFC297

Chants of DDP!! Wow. The crowd has turned!

Dricus gas tank is insane.

Du Plessis takes fourth 10-9. Fight is even 38-38 on my card. Fifth should decide it. #UFC297

Very good 4th round for Du Plessis. I have it 2-2. Could very well be 3-1 Du Plessis. #UFC297

Strickland is bleeding badly around the left eye. Key question is to what extent it impairs his vision. Looks like it might be playing a role.
— Luke Thomas🏋️♀️ (@lthomasnews) January 21, 2024
Strickland seems a bit mentally checked out. Not fighting his usual style, not listening to his corner at all, not pressing a tired opponent. He’s basically in survival mode even though Dricus hasn’t done much himself. #ufc297

Strickland busted up around the left eye early in round 4. Du Plessis pressing well, Strickland still popping the jab hard. #UFC297
— Bloody Elbow (@BloodyElbow) January 21, 2024
Strickland's doing a commendable job of avoiding the worst of DDP's offense, but that's two rounds in a row where he doesn't have much offense for himself to speak of.
29-28 DDP— Luke Thomas🏋️♀️ (@lthomasnews) January 21, 2024
Very close 3rd round.
Slight lean to du Plessis for landing the more impact strikes.
29-28 DDP heading into the championship rounds.— Aaron Bronsteter (@aaronbronsteter) January 21, 2024
10-9 du Plessis. Much better round for him where he had a better feel for the range.
19-19 through two.— Aaron Bronsteter (@aaronbronsteter) January 21, 2024
Dricus rd 2. 1-1.

10-9 Strickland in a close round.
Low output from du Plessis early on, but he picked it up as the round went on.— Aaron Bronsteter (@aaronbronsteter) January 21, 2024
Good first round for Strickland

I've got it 19-19 after two. Despite what the booth says, Barriault had a totally fine round 2. Could be 20-18 either way if we're really being honest. #UFC297

Chris Curtis complained about not being on the main card of the PPV his last couple fights.
Not a good showing to get future main card spots. Horrible fight from both guys. #UFC297— MMA Prediction Guru (@PredictionMma) January 21, 2024
