UEFA investigating Real Madrid talisman’s goal celebration at Euros

Real Madrid talisman Jude Bellingham has been dominating the headlines since last night after he helped England avoid early elimination from the UEFA Euro 2024.

Indeed, the 21-year-old midfield sensation produced a sensational bicycle kick in stoppage time to help the Three Lions draw level to Slovakia in the Round of 16 tie, before Harry Kane’s extra-time goal sent them through to the quarterfinals.

Bellingham’s performance prior to his goal was criticised by some sections and the Real Madrid ace hit back at them after the game.

However, it appears that the England ace is now under UEFA’s scanner due to an action he made right after scoring his goal.

UEFA investigating Bellingham celebration

Indeed, according to Martyn Ziegler of The Times, UEFA have opened an investigation into the actions made by Bellingham right after he scored the equaliser for England against Slovakia.

The 21-year-old pulled off a stunning bicycle kick to level things on the night before wheeling off into celebrations, as he said “Who else?” showing his self-confidence.

Following that Bellingham did his trademark open arms celebration, along with England captain Harry Kane.

However, what followed soon after has come under the microscope as the midfielder made a gesture where put his hand to his mouth before moving it towards his groin.

Now, UEFA’s Ethics and Disciplinary Committee is taking a look at the actions as it could come under ‘a potential violation of the basic rules of decent conduct’.

Bellingham’s explanation

Bellingham, though, has already clarified his actions stating that he did not mean any disrespect towards England’s opponents Slovakia and that his gesture was directed towards friends sitting in the audience.

The action was an “inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game,” he clarified before adding that he had “nothing but respect for Slovakia.”

With an official investigation now underway, Bellingham faces the risk of being punished by UEFA if his gesture was found in breach of the governing body’s ethics and disciplinary guidelines.
