Yahoo Sports Nine MLB players to don Tyler Skaggs tributes on Players' Weekend jerseys
Another round of tributes for Tyler Skaggs is set to hit MLB jerseys on Friday.
A group of nine MLB players with ties to the deceased Los Angeles Angels pitcher and his native Southern California will honor Skaggs with their Players Weekend jersey nicknames this weekend, according to MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince.
Additionally, every team will wear uniform patches honoring Skaggs.
Who’s joining the Tyler Skaggs tribute?
The group reportedly includes:
Milwaukee Brewers outfielders Ryan Braun
Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich
Brewers third baseman Mike Moustakas
Washington Nationals pitcher Patrick Corbin
Chicago White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty
Atlanta Braves pitcher Max Fried
Texas Rangers pitcher Jesse Chavez
Rangers first baseman Scott Heineman
Every player will wear “LOVE YOU TY” as the name on their jersey except for Chavez and Corbin, who will instead wear “FORTY FIVE.” Corbin had previously worn Skaggs’ No. 45 during a game with the Nationals, throwing seven innings with one earned run and seven strikeouts.
The players reportedly plan to wear the Skaggs tributes on Friday then revert to their normal Players Weekend nicknames for the rest of the series. Fried will be an exception to that, as he apparently asked to wear the tribute for a scheduled start on Saturday against the New York Mets.
One of the ringleaders for this idea was reportedly Braun, who met a 19-year-old Skaggs after he was drafted by the Angels out of high school. Their relationship became strong enough that Braun attended Skaggs’ wedding last offseason, so Braun asked his fellow SoCal-native Brewers to join him in a tribute.
The first Skaggs jersey tribute was an all-timer
The collection of former Skaggs teammates and Southern California natives are the second coordinated group to don a tribute to Skaggs on their jerseys. The first group was the Angels themselves, and that game turned out to be one of the most emotional nights in baseball history.
With every player wearing Skaggs’ name and number on their jerseys, the Angels combined to throw a no-hitter. Because of that feat, one of those Skaggs jerseys went to the Hall of Fame, immortalizing the pitcher among the great performances of baseball.
