Gagner will be playing at the Spengler Cup for the second time in his career. In his first tournament, he recorded three assists in four games during the 2012-13 season. Now, in his second tournament, Gagner is an experienced veteran who has been selected to captain Canada's squad.

The 35-year-old played 48 games with the Jets during the 2022-23 campaign, scoring eight goals and 14 points. Gagner rejoined the Edmonton Oilers last year, splitting his time between the Oilers and their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. Gagner hasn't played a game this season and has been rumoured to join an SHL team, but he'll first put his focus on playing with Canada.

Shaw played just 35 games with the Jets during the 2019-20 season, scoring three goals and five points, but was a force with the Manitoba Moose. He played in 79 games, scoring 31 goals and 53 points.

Most recently, the 32-year-old has captained the Toronto Maple Leafs' AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. During that time, he's been among the league leaders in points and goals and has become a well-respected leader in the Maple Leafs organization and is why he has been selected as an alternate captain of Team Canada.

The tournament begins on Dec. 26, with Canada taking on the hosts, HC Davos.
