There is nothing like the drama of an international tournament, and during the World Juniors gold medal game on Saturday, there was no shortage of entertainment.

In the final between hockey powerhouses Canada and Finland, the former and favourites came out strong to a 2-0 lead after two periods, courtesy of Joshua Roy and Kent Johnson. Finland then came storming back to even the score with two goals of their own and forced the best spectacle in the sport: overtime hockey.

It was immediately chaotic. Both teams going for the other’s throat off the drop of the puck. Finland had a strong possession just a couple minutes into the extra period and had a very solid shot to end the game, beating Canadian netminder Dylan Garand. With gold on the line, McTavish saw his goaltender beat but batted the floating puck down out of the air, preventing a sure goal. It is something out of a movie, and perhaps the most bonkers highlight of any World Juniors tournament in recent memory.

Of course, the entire hockey world was set on fire by this mind-blowing, surreal play to save a country from a heartbreaking loss.

Just over a minute later, Kent Johnson was able to net his second goal of the game and earn gold for Canada.

After the game, McTavish joked about his positioning on the heroic save. “I don’t even know why I was behind our goalie,” said the 19-year-old, laughing. “Not the best positioning now that I think about it.”

Due to the pandemic-forced postponement of this tournament to August, this will now serve as a warm-up for the full hockey season to get going. We’re not so sure that we will see a play as good as this one though.

McTavish finished the tournament with an impressive 17 points, earning the tournament MVP and top forward awards.
