AC Milan added to their midfield in the summer, but there are early signs that the area is incomplete. The Rossoneri have already noticed this, and a deputy to a midfielder has been found.

Throughout the 2023/24 season, Milan’s midfield was scrutinised. Hearing about a cycle became a regular occurrence, and it consumed any chances of the Diavolo ending the season successfully. Injuries, depth, quality, structure. Back to front, front to back, Milan struggled with the same four themes on repeat.

While they are not struggling with those themes again, they quickly could. Suggestions have been in place about a lack of depth within the squad, and in the midfield, it is especially noticeable. Paulo Fonseca, simply put, does not have the profiles to replace the midfield.

This has already been noticed, and with the Rossoneri using the fewest starters in Europe, there is a need to make additions to the squad, potentially as early as January, and a target has already been identified.

In Tuttosport’s report this morning, they suggested that Fofana was slowly approaching his best, but there was a downside to it. The advancement may be rushed. Although he is the perfect midfielder for Fonseca’s system, he is only just returning to 100%, so an injury would be a serious problem.

With this in mind, the report suggested that the club are aware of this issue, and have already identified Johnny Cardoso as a deputy for the Frenchman. A move in January, perhaps, could be on the cards.
