Truth revealed on future of Manchester City midfielder as conversations loom on transfer status
The future of one of Manchester City’s brightest young prospects has now been clarified by club chiefs and regional media following fresh transfer claims in recent days.
That concerns the future of Academy graduate Jacob Wright, who has been a regular feature in training sessions and matchday squads with Pep Guardiola’s first-team since the turn of the year, making his senior debut for the club in the process.
Having progressed into City’s Elite Development Squad for the most-recent 2023/24 season, and at the age of just 18-years-old, Wright made his senior debut for the club via a second-half substitute appearance in the FA Cup third round meeting with Huddersfield Town in January.
Given the extended period of training alongside Manchester City’s first-team talents, the United States pre-season tour presented a further opportunity for Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff to assess the player’s level and development.
However, with other options now ahead of him in the defensive midfield ranking for the new season – namely the emergence of Nico O’Reilly – Jacob Wright has been linked with loan moves away from Manchester City in the coming weeks.
According to the information of the Manchester Evening News’ Simon Bajkowski, Manchester City will only finalise their plans for Academy midfielder Jacob Wright when the club returns home from their pre-season tour of the United States.
While it is pointed out that the Premier League champions may ultimately decide that a loan move is the best option for the teenage prospect, recent reports of an agreement with League One side Peterborough United were not correct.
Posh chairman took to social media platform X to publicly rule out an agreement with Manchester City, with Darragh MacAnthony stating that there have been no discussions over the prospect of signing the player who has already made his senior debut under Guardiola.
Wright is one of a number of youth players linked with temporary moves away from Manchester City in order to give them a full taste of senior men’s football before deciding on whether their pathway is best suited to the Etihad Stadium.
Among those subject to temporary interest within the Football League are Micah Hamilton and conversations over a deal with Championship side Middlesbrough, as well as Callum Doyle, who is poised to join Norwich City for the forthcoming season.
James McAtee spent the last two seasons on loan with Sheffield United in the Championship and Premier League, before returning to Manchester City this summer, where he is now expected to remain into the new season.
