Troy Terry Named NHL Second Star of the Week

Troy Terry has been the Anaheim Ducks' only consistent offensive driver since the beginning of the 2024-25 season. He has notched 14 goals and 33 points through the first 39 games of the season, leading the Ducks in every major statistical category. He has a ten-point lead on linemates Frank Vatrano and Ryan Strome, who sit tied for second on the Ducks in scoring.

Troy Terry Isn't Old, but Feels Old

"I think Troy's found his game," Ducks head coach Greg Cronin said following the Ducks' win over the Lightning on Sunday. "We had these conversations last year where I think he felt because he was the highest-paid player in the organization, that he had to make a play every time he stepped on the ice and he had to beat the same guy twice to add some flash to it. That's a reflection of how confident he is.

"He's discovered there's a 'risk vs reward' percentage to how he's making plays at the offensive blueline and he's getting rewarded for it, he's been outstanding with that."

On Monday, the NHL released their "Thee Stars of the Week" for Dec. 30-Jan. 5. Terry earned the title of second star behind the Minnesota Wild's Marco Rossi, with four goals and six points in the four games the Ducks played last week.

“He’s trusting his abilities. He’s a playmaker and always in the right spots," Ducks captain Radko Gudas said. "I’m really thrilled to see him playing like that, carrying the offense, and helping his linemates. They’re unbelievable together. I’m just happy for him to get recognized.”

The Ducks won three of those four games, all against playoff teams in the forms of the New Jersey Devils, Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers, and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Terry is one of the more cerebral forwards in the NHL who can sense the intention of opponents. He manipulates defenders into leaning one way or another and draws penalties at will. He calculates how opposing puck carriers want to attack, strips them of possession, and turns those opportunities into quick-strike offense the other way.

He's been the puck-transporter on his line alongside Strome and Vatrano, the team's top line this season. He operates in the space they afford him, draws the attention of defenders, and gets to the middle of the ice regularly.

Terry has eight points in his last six games and is on pace to eclipse his 2021-22 career-high point total when he scored 67 points in 75 games.

Troy Terry's status for Tuesday's game against the Flames is uncertain. He was absent from the Ducks' morning skate as he and his wife are expecting.
