Troy Aikman says Bears rookie Caleb Williams is 'defeated'

During the Minnesota Vikings blowout victory over the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football in Week 15, ESPN commentator Troy Aikman gave his insight on Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

Before winning three Super Bowl championships as a member of the Dallas Cowboys, Aikman struggled in his first two seasons, including going 0-11 in his rookie season. As the game got out of control for Chicago against Minnesota in Week 15, Aikman took time on the broadcast to discuss the state of Williams, who he said looked defeated during the game, as he has taken 58 sacks on the season.

"I was 0-11 as a starter and he's [Williams] had a much better rookie season than I had," Aikman said. "You mentioned we were watching him on the sidelines, he was grimacing and in an enormous amount of pain, and as I watch him, you can tell, he's a defeated guy. I mentioned that he hasn't been through anything like this at any point in his career, and what you worry about is a rookie quarterback losing confidence."

Being tied for the league lead in the amount of times he's been sacked this season (58), Williams is also third in NFL history for most sacks taken by a rookie in league history, trailing only Bryce Young (62), and David Carr (76), with three games remaining on the season.

Williams has not thrown an interception in the past eight games, but has lost two fumbles in the last two weeks, while the team as a whole continues to lose games, eight in a row. It's not the rookie season Chicago had hoped for their No. 1 overall pick, and definitely not the team success he had hoped to have given all the talent at the skill positions around him.
