Helping future wife meet her goals influenced Jacob Trouba's desire to leave Winnipeg

By the time news broke Monday of the trade involving Winnipeg’s Jacob Trouba and Neal Pionk of the New York Rangers, most Jets fans were already convinced that the former ninth overall pick wanted out for reasons specific to the hockey market itself.

It turns out that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Trouba’s desired move to New York is about more than hockey. His intention is to put his future wife in the best possible position to accomplish her goal of becoming a doctor.

Last season Trouba put up his best numbers of his career, recording 50 points in 82 regular season games. He will get the opportunity to get more ice time on a rebuilding Rangers team as well. Winnipeg in return will receive a younger, and lesser Pionk, but also a first-round draft choice.

It’s a win for the Rangers, who will gain a top-pairing defender on their blue line. Trouba is joining the team as restricted free agent, so the team will need to sign him to a new contract soon, though it shouldn’t be an issue.
