Trooper deletes tweet of picture with Tony Stewart after pulling Stewart over
If you’re an Illinois State Trooper, it’s probably not a good idea to take a picture with a retired NASCAR driver after you pull him over.
Trooper Damein Cunningham stopped Tony Stewart on Interstate 88 in Illinois over the weekend. He then tweeted a picture of the two of them. It’s since been deleted and was being reviewed by the state police, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Stewart was pulled over by Cunningham for improper lane usage and was given a warning, according to Bradley, who said the state police are reviewing the trooper’s Twitter post.
“The ISP is currently looking into the posting of the photograph,” he said. The tweet has since been deleted.
The picture appears to be a selfie taken by Stewart and we’re trying to figure out just how the idea came about.
Was it Cunningham’s or Stewart’s? Did Cunningham give his phone to Stewart and have the driver snap the picture when he could have just taken it himself? Was it Stewart’s idea and Stewart’s phone and did he send Cunningham the picture?
It would have also been funny if Cunningham walked up to Stewart’s vehicle and said “Sir, why are you driving like a NASCAR driver?” before he recognized who Stewart was. If Stewart changed lanes before the start/finish line on the restart he would have also been obligated to serve a pass-through penalty.
Cunningham apologized to Stewart on Sunday for the “stir” that the picture had caused.
