Trevor Bauer found a smarter and safer way to spend his downtime
Cleveland Indians pitcher Trevor Bauer is a man with many hobbies.
Of course, we’re all painfully aware of his passion for building and flying drones, which led to an off-field injury and this disturbing scene during the ALCS.

He also has his share of quirks, which are often evident in the way he prepares for games both on the field and off.
What many people may not realize though is just how smart Bauer is. We’re talking about a guy who majored in mechanical engineering while at UCLA. We’re also talking about a true student of pitching. He’s long been known to analyze the math and science behind pitching. And because of that, his Twitter is often filled with math equations.
For most of us, these equations go over our heads. In the case of one young and savvy student though, it actually led her to seek Bauer’s help with her homework. And wouldn’t you know Bauer fully embraced the idea of being a Twitter math tutor.
Check it out.
@BauerOutage oh and also do you understand the slope of a line and y intercept? I have a math test coming up I don't get certain things
— Maddie Martin (@m_martin2021) November 12, 2016
@m_martin2021 for every 1 unit on the x axis go 2 units on the y axis. y intercept is where it crosses the y axis. Make y 0 and figure x.

At this point, Bauer was fully engaged. This then led to a long exchange as Bauer guided her to the correct answer.

You’ll have to click on the images in the above tweet to see the full conversation, but eventually the complex math problem was solved.
Needless to say, young Maddie Martin was quite thankful for Bauer’s patience and assistance.
@BauerOutage it did! I got the question right and I never would have without your help thank you you have no idea how much that meant to me

Well done, Trevor.
Now, if you don’t mind, your friends with the Indians have already signed you up as a full-time math tutor during the offseason and a part-timer on your off days during the season. Sure, it’s not nearly as fun as flying drones, but it’s clearly safer, or at least less likely to leave you bleeding all over the field.
