Travis Kelce Hilariously Went by 'Charles' as a Kid, According to Brother Jason — Here's Why
When he was younger, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end idolized an NBA star so much that he took his name
Travis Kelce had a different name as a kid — and his brother Jason Kelce recently explained the hilarious reason why.
While appearing on ESPN shortly before the Saturday, Jan. 18 game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans, Jason, 37, shared the funny tidbit about his brother’s alter ego, which was in honor of an NBA legend.
“He told the entire block his name was Charles because his favorite basketball player was Charles Barkley,” Jason explained to his fellow co-hosts, who laughed at the story.
The moment was shared by the brothers’ New Heights podcast account on X.

“We found out at a block party cause all the other parents were like, ‘There goes Charles,' " Jason said. "That’s the kind of kid Travis was. He was always living up to all his sports idols for sure."
Travis, 35, and the Chiefs are currently doing their best to earn another trip to the Super Bowl, after winning the title in 2023 and 2024. A victory in New Orleans on Sunday, Feb. 9 would make the Chiefs the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
In a pair of videos posted on Instagram on Friday, Jan. 17, Travis played hype man.
“Playoff football is the most meaningful football that you’ll ever play in your life,” Kelce said in one of the videos. “I cherish every single play, man, I really do. When you’re in it, you’re always trying to strive for greatness, being greater than what you are. You know, obviously there’s a historic run and something that we can achieve that no other team has ever achieved, and that fuels you.”
The Chiefs will play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Jan. 26 in the AFC championship game. If they win, Kansas City head to the Super Bowl for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
