All About Travis Etienne Jr.'s Younger Brother Trevor (and How He's Following In the NFL Star's Footsteps!)
Jacksonville Jaguars' Travis Etienne Jr. and Georgia Bulldogs' Trevor Etienne share the same jersey number and position
Brothers Travis Etienne Jr. and Trevor Etienne have achieved success on the football field by pushing one another to be the best they can be.
Travis has been a star running back from his high school days to his career at Clemson to his drafting by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Trevor had a record-breaking career at Jennings High School — the same high school Travis attended — which led to him being recruited by the University of Florida, where he played two seasons before transferring to the University of Georgia.
Donnetta Etienne, a nurse, and Travis Etienne Sr., who works in the oil industry, welcomed their son Travis on Jan. 26, 1999, and Trevor on July 9, 2004. The boys grew up in the small town of Jennings, La., with a competitive brotherly bond that pushed them to excel on the field.
“Growing up, my family instilled in us a strong spirituality, a loyalty to one another and a drive to be the best. Football became our journey, a passion to achieve greatness at the highest level,” the brothers said in a commercial for Ellianos Coffee.
Here's everything to know about football player brothers Travis Etienne Jr. and Trevor Etienne.
Trevor and Travis grew up in Louisiana and still love their mom’s Cajun cooking
Travis and Trevor grew up in the small town of Jennings, which has a population of less than 10,000 people. Travis spoke about how Jennings shaped him during a pre-game press conference in 2020.
“It’s a very small town. It takes a village to raise a kid so I kind of knew everyone around there,” Travis said. “It kept me humble [and] made me who I am today, made me appreciate things a little more because, just being in Jennings, not too many people get the opportunities that I have in life, so I’m very thankful, grateful and it’s just helped me with my outlook on life.”
Trevor and Travis grew up with their mom cooking them homemade Cajun meals. Travis told ESPN that his favorite meal is smothered pork chops with corn and rice while Trevor said his is turkey necks with mustard greens and ham hocks.
Whenever the brothers are with their mom, they eat their favorite home-cooked meals as much as possible.
They were enrolled in multiple sports as kids to keep them out of trouble
Growing up in a small town like Jennings wasn’t always easy for Travis and Trevor. Their parents kept them busy by getting them involved in multiple sports.
"We kind of sheltered them from the drugs and alcohol and gangs," Donnetta told ESPN. "You finish practice and school, you're tired. So we did a three-sport household for each kid, and that kept them off the streets, kept them rooted and grounded in their books. It was a good formula."
He is more than five years younger than Travis
Due to their nearly six-year age gap, Travis was often a mentor to his little brother, and Trevor wanted to learn everything he could from his big brother.
“Looking up to him, I wanted to do everything he’d done ... just following his footsteps,” Trevor told Gators Online during a press conference in 2023. “Wherever he went, I wanted to go, so watching him, I thank him for doing the right thing ... I feel like that’s why I’m here today.
Trevor is known as the more vocal and outgoing of the two whereas Travis is known as the more reserved brother, except for when he is around family and close friends. As a kid, Trevor would even follow Travis around to hang out with his friends and play football, which annoyed Travis before he realized that his younger brother's football skills could help him on the field.
"Everyone always underestimated him, but he was always the best one," Travis told ESPN. "I'd always pick him first, and we'd always win."
They attended the same high school
Although they didn’t attend Jennings High School at the same time, the Etienne brothers left a lasting legacy there. Travis was a breakout star known for his speed and finished his high school career with 8,864 yards and 115 touchdowns.
After watching Travis at Clemson and seeing how they were trying to use him, Trevor learned that he would need to be more versatile, being able to play as a receiver as well as a running back. Trevor excelled as a versatile running back — even filling in at quarterback during his senior year when the team’s starter got injured — and received scholarship offers from across the country.
Travis helped Trevor decide which college to attend and Trevor encouraged Travis to finish college
Travis and Trevor both influenced one another's post-secondary careers. Trevor knew that he needed to carve out his own path separate from Travis' superstardom and Travis not only supported this decision, but encouraged it.
"I told my brother to go wherever you want to go," Travis told ESPN. "But I told him no Clemson. I wanted him to carve out being his own man.”
Knowing that Trevor looked up to him also inspired Travis to stay at Clemson for his senior year to graduate, even though he was already good enough to be a top NFL prospect after his junior year. Travis said that he did this to show Trevor the value of getting a degree and finishing what you start.
"I feel like it put pressure on him," Trevor told ESPN. "Everything he does is magnified because I'm watching. He had to be his best at every moment to make sure I'm doing the right things."
They are one another's biggest support
Travis and Trevor sometimes get nervous watching one another play.
“I am bought in ... I had went to his first game at Utah. I remember he dropped that ball and it was like my heart dropped,” Travis told the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022. “I feel like when I’m watching, I’m also on the field, so when things happen I’m very excited ... I probably am the worst one to watch my brother play with because of the emotions that I have.”
Trevor was with Travis in 2021 when the older Etienne brother was drafted into the NFL and shared a post on Instagram with a message about what his brother means to him.
“Living our Dreams❣️. Appreciate you being that role model for me, showing me what it takes to make it to the next level," Trevor wrote in the caption. "Thankful to have you on my side pushing me to be the best I can be. Appreciate everything you do for me! Words can’t explain how proud I am of you❤️. Love you brodie.”
They constantly push one another to better
Trevor and Travis also encourage one another to improve.
“I remember he sent me some clips on Snapchat and I immediately started ... telling him what he could have done better or how he could set things up,” Travis told the Jacksonville Jaguars. “It was a great run, but I just want him to be the very best and I feel like I didn’t have that person to take me over the top ... I’m going to continue to just help him to be better than I was.”
According to The Athletic, when Trevor was watching one of Travis’ games he joked with his mom that he’d need to teach Travis how to play better after a dropped catch.
“I’m gonna have to take your son out and teach him how to catch,” Travis said to Donnetta during a Clemson game.
Trevor has acted in commercials with Travis and received joint endorsements
As Travis was reaching NFL stardom and Trevor was finding success on the football field in college, they started doing commercials together. In 2023, Travis and Trevor starred in a commercial and partnered with Ellianos Coffee — a coffee company that began in South Florida — for two specialty energy drinks themed after their respective teams.
“The Etienne brothers perfectly embody the spirit of unity, determination and family. They represent what it truly means to be a family, pushing one another toward greatness just as we at Ellianos have grown with the support of our family,” Ellianos Coffee founder Scott Stewart said in the news release.
The brothers also starred in a commercial for Chipotle, which made light of their real-life relationship dynamics. The commercial showed Travis watching Trevor practice and giving him tips on how he could improve, before telling Trevor that he nailed his Chipotle order.
