Marcus Rashford is in talks with PSG about a shock move to Paris as the Manchester United forward considers his future. The Independent reported that Rashford, who has one year left on his Old Trafford contact with an option for the club to extend for a further year, has held discussions with the French champions via his representatives. However, PSG are not ready to firm up their interest with an offer while it is thought Rashford still wants to prove himself at United under new manager Erik ten Hag.

United meanwhile are trying to bring in a holding midfielder and are close to signing Juventus’ Adrien Rabiot. Director John Murtough is in Turin today to discuss personal terms with Rabiot’s mother Veronique, who is known to be a tough negotiator.

Elsewhere Man City are continuing their exhaustive search for a left-back, and a surprising name on the shortlist is Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney, according to 90min – perhaps they should have kept Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Barcelona raise fresh €100m in desperate bid to register new players for Liga season

Friday 12 August 2022 20:00 , Michael Jones

Barcelona have sold a 24.5% stake in their audiovisual studio to production company Orpheus Media for €100million euros (£85m), the Liga club said on Friday, as they look to raise more funds to register new players.

The agreement comes after the club signed a deal with digital fan token firm Socios.com to sell off 25% of their stake in Barca Studios last month.

“With this investment the strategic partners in Barca Studios show confidence in the value of the project and the future of digital content in the world of sport,” the club said in a statement.

Liverpool report ‘significant increase’ in fans sanctioned for abuse

Friday 12 August 2022 19:45 , Michael Jones

Liverpool banned one fan for life for using discriminatory language at Anfield last season with several other suspensions of between one and three years handed out for similar offences.

The club reported a “significant increase” in the number of supporters sanctioned for abuse in the 2021-22 campaign, with the offence making up a quarter of all issues reported to the club’s official sanctions panel as part of their Red Together awareness campaign.

Liverpool said 100 per cent of the issues reviewed by the panel received a sanction and it is understood one of those cases resulted in a lifetime ban.

What does Erik ten Hag want in a striker at Manchester United?

Friday 12 August 2022 19:30 , Michael Jones

When Marnix Kolder was playing in a side managed by Erik ten Hag, his role was fairly uncomplicated. “I was the ‘escape’,” he told The Independent earlier this year.

“When the ball was pressured at the back, the long ball from the keeper or the central defender came to me. I don’t know the word in English – a coat stand? The “kapstok”. It’s a typical word in Dutch. The big person they can play the balls to, then you play to the midfielders or to the side.”

In other words, a target man.

Kolder was Ten Hag’s centre forward at Go Ahead Eagles during the first year of his managerial career in 2012-13, which ended in promotion to the Eredivisie.

At 6ft 2in in height, and despite being the wrong side of 30, he scored a goal every other game in his only year working under the future Manchester United manager, before Ten Hag left the “kick and rush” of the Eerste Divisie, Dutch football’s second tier, that Kolder describes to take charge of Bayern Munich II and work in the orbit of Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City will not send Sergio Gomez out on loan after completing the signing of the Spain Under-21 international, manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

The Premier League champions are close to concluding a deal for the 21-year-old former Barcelona academy player after agreeing an initial £11million fee with Anderlecht this week.

City had earmarked Gomez as a development player and were considering sending him out on loan to gain experience but Guardiola’s squad is currently short of senior left-backs.

It is the first time that the two men who sparked countless debates over whether they were suited to playing together, but actually did so 71 times for England, have met as managers.

Barcelona have set a price tag of £17m for the USA international but United are hoping to strike a deal by offering the Portuguese full-back in exchange.

Dest has made 72 appearances across two seasons at the Nou Camp after he joined the club for £23.5m from Ajax.

Man Utd to move for Ziyech?

Friday 12 August 2022 17:20 , Michael Jones

Manchester United could try to sign Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech before the summer transfer window shuts according to reports from the Netherlands.

Dutch media outlet Voetbal Primeur claims that Erik ten Hag may try to bring the 29-year-old to Old Trafford though it’s unlikely that Chelsea will sell to a Premier League rival.

Ten Hag managed the 29-year-old during his time at Ajax, and it’s little wonder why he might want to sign him for United. Ziyech bagged an incredible 49 goals and 80 assists in 164 games for the Dutch giants.

The attacking midfielder, who can also play as a winger, has struggled somewhat since joining Chelsea for around £36 million, racking up just 14 goals and 10 assists in 83 games for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

It seems as though he’s now pushing for an exit from Stamford Bridge, according to a report from the Evening Standard.

Crystal Palace looking for the ‘right’ player

Friday 12 August 2022 17:11 , Michael Jones

Crystal Palace manager, Patrick Vieira, says that the club are looking for the ‘right’ player to bring in to bolster the squad after the departure of Christian Benteke and Conor Gallagher returning to parent club Chelsea.

“[We are] always trying to improve the squad. Benteke has left and we will do our best to find that player [to replace him], but, if not, then we will work with the players that we have here.” said the Frenchman.

“It’s all about finding the right player who will improve the squad and try to see if we can afford that player. I strongly believe that we are doing what we need to do improve the squad but there is a possibility that we are not going to find that player so we have to concentrate on the players that we have.”

Villarreal unable to stop Pino leaving

Friday 12 August 2022 16:54 , Michael Jones

Unai Emery admits Villarreal will be powerless to stop Yeremy Pino leaving the club if a suitable bid comes in for the winger.

Arsenal have launched an ambitious bid for the 19-year-old Spain international, who has an €80m (£67.5m) release clause in his contract.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Villarreal would be likely to accept any bid in the region of €40m to €50m to solve ‘economic problems’ at the club and the key factor behind a move to the Emirates will now be if Pino is happy to leave.

The former Arsenal manager acknowledged: “If an offer arrives for players like Yeremy Pino, then he will have to leave. We have a responsibility with the club. It is what it is.”

He made a brief substitute appearance at Crystal Palace at the end of last season and then against West Bromich Albion earlier this week.

Erik ten Hag expects Marcus Rashford to remain at Manchester United amid speculation linking the forward with Paris Saint-Germain.

Gallagher back to Crystal Palace?

Friday 12 August 2022 16:22 , Michael Jones

“The window is still open. Conor is still a Chelsea player until we hear otherwise.”

That is the view of Crystal Palace boss, Patrick Vieira, who would love to bring Conor Gallagher back to Selhurst Park on loan this season.

Gallagher played for the Eagles last term and was a crucial part of their midfield, earning himself an England call up along the way. However, exits at Gallagher’s parent club Chelsea mean no move is likely to be forthcoming unless the Blues bring in reinforcements.

The are also rumours about a potential swap deal between Palace and Chelsea that would see Gallagher return to Selhurst Park with Wilfried Zaha travelling to Stamford Bridge.

Like Vieira says, the window is still open and anything could happen yet.

A new contract for Saliba?

Friday 12 August 2022 16:08 , Michael Jones

Mikel Arteta has praised defender William Saliba after his Arsenal debut after the defender was named man-of-the-match when the Gunners beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on Friday last week.

“He’s a determined focused and a humble boy,” said Arteta of Saliba. “He wants to talk through what he wants to go through and be coached.

“The first impression we got [after getting him back from loan] from him was really positive. His body language, his presence, his confidence that he is acting with is very mature.

“We will address these issues like we always do, the board and Edu will prepare all the scenarios we face. We want all the players to be valued but it’s just the start of the season.”

Watford looking at Martins

O Globo‘s Marcello Neves claims there’s ‘expectation’ that the Hornets will make an offer of between €8m and €9m for the youngster.

Udinese are also in a strong pursuit for Martins and it’s claimed that the club have already placed four official bids for the player - with the last being of €7m - and all of them were rejected.

Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard thrown together again with matching managerial ambitions

Friday 12 August 2022 15:48 , Michael Jones

It is a fixture from the first month of the Football League and it will contain a first this weekend. Aston Villa and Everton’s initial meeting came in September 1888. Some 134 years later, the English top flight has a maiden game between two clubs whose managers are European Cup-winning captains.

And if that is dependent on a job title – Phil Thompson was in caretaker charge of Liverpool when they faced Graeme Souness’ Blackburn in 2001 – it is nevertheless a sign of the stature of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

As players, anyway.

Jose Mourinho told Lampard he was the best footballer in the world. Zinedine Zidane once declared Gerrard was. In 2005, they finished second and third respectively in the Ballon d’Or voting, behind only Ronaldinho.

Their presence in the dugouts now could seem a throwback: the days when great players were automatically afforded opportunities in management seemed consigned to the past by the career coaches, with their Mourinho-esque grasp of detail and their years of experience while contemporaries were still playing.

But there seems to be a wider experiment, also including Patrick Vieira, if iconic players can use their charisma, their force of personality and the knowledge acquired from working for the world’s best managers to win as much in the technical area as they did on the pitch.

AC Milan switch targets

Friday 12 August 2022 15:40 , Michael Jones

Having been linked with signing Japhet Tanganga for most of the summer, AC Milan have reportedly switched their focus to signing another Tottenham defender in Davinson Sanchez.

The Italian giants were keen on taking Tanganga on loan with a view to a permanent deal but Spurs were only interested in an outright sale and refused Milan’s approach.

Reports from Italy say that the Serie A side are back in touch with Tottenham but this time over signing Davinson Sanchez.

Sanchez is the replacement for either Cristian Romero or Eric Dier in Antonio Conte’s back three with new signing Clement Lenglet expected to eventually replace Ben Davies as the left-sided centre-back.

Sanchez has made 181 appearances for the club in all competitions since signing from Ajax for £42m in 2017. The report adds that the deal is likely to be a loan with an optional future fee clause, rather than a permanent deal.

Transfer updates from Moyes

Friday 12 August 2022 15:23 , Michael Jones

West Ham manager David Moyes has updates on three players that West Ham were looking to bring in but it’s bad news all round for the Hammers.

Moyes said: “We are not any further forward with [Thilo Kehrer] at the moment, but we are progressing it.”

Before adding: “We bid for him – but the boy chose not to come” when speaking about Mathues Nunes.

Moyes then addressed the rumours regarding Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, saying: “No it’s not us. If it is, then I don’t know about it that’s for sure.

“It’s important to get good players in – people who can make the team better. We’ll try and do that. We’re trying really hard. Sometimes good quality players have other options or other ideas, so you can miss out as well.”

Frank Lampard defends Conor Coady’s positional flexibility at Everton

Friday 12 August 2022 15:15 , Michael Jones

Frank Lampard has insisted Conor Coady can play as one of two centre-backs after Wolves loaned out their captain when they changed system.

Wolves manager Bruno Lage swapped to a back four this season, picked Max Kilman and new signing Nathan Collins as his two central defenders and dropped the converted midfielder Coady, who had been virtually ever present in his seven seasons at Molineux.

But while he allowed Coady to join Everton for the season, Lampard is adamant it does not mean he has to play with three central defenders as he cited Gareth Southgate’s belief Coady can operate in different formations.

Bruno Lage wants more signings

Friday 12 August 2022 15:04 , Michael Jones

Wolves boss, Bruno Lage, says he would like to bring in ‘three or four’ more players as well as get the rest of his squad fit for purpose before the end of the transfer window if possible.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s fixtures he said: “Time for players to get fit, important players like Raul (Jimenez) and Joao (Moutinho), Semedo and Adama to improve their fitness and time to work the dynamic with the players and this new system.

“We still have 20 days. Patience and trust. Trust in us, in our work, and judge at the end of this window.”

Fletcher to Wigan?

Friday 12 August 2022 14:55 , Michael Jones

Wigan Athletic are closing on the capture of Watford striker Ashley Fletcher who is set to have a medical at the club before joining on loan.

It had been a frustratingly slow start to the window for the Latics but things are starting to pick up, with the club having seemingly won the race to land Fletcher.

He joins Leam Richardson’s side who are newly promoted to the Championship and are hoping to cement themselves in England’s second division.

Six players– Gavin Massey, Kell Watts, Tom Bayliss, Glen Rea, Jordan Jones and Jamie McGrath – have left the club since the end of last term with Latics only adding defender Ryan Nyambe and forward Nathan Broadhead this summer.

Sarr ‘unlikely’ to join Newcastle

Friday 12 August 2022 14:46 , Michael Jones

Watford’s Ismaila Sarr is ‘very unlikely’ to join Newcastle United this summer but Leeds United remain interested in striking an agreement for the 24-year-old according to the Daily Star.

Manchester United where also thinking about the winger who is regularly rumoured with a move to Old Trafford though there is little movement from United’s end.

Sarr recorded an assist in the opening match of the season against Sheffield United and followed up with an outrageous goal from his own half against West Bromwich Albion.

He already has 10 Premier League goals to his name and the reported asking price of £25 million seems a bargain. The Athletic is saying that Leeds aren’t actively pursuing this transfer but as ever interest in Sarr will continue to grow until the window ends in September.

Fulham boss Marco Silva has backed Aleksandar Mitrovic to finally prove he can cut it in the Premier League.

Serbia striker Mitrovic announced his return to the top flight in style when he scored twice in last week’s opening 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

Yet the 27-year-old, who fired 43 goals in Fulham’s promotion season last year, has long been seen as a player who is too good for the Championship but out of his depth in the top flight.

Nunes turned down West Ham

David Moyes has revealed that midfielder Mathues Nunes turned down the chance to join West Ham United.

The Sporting Lisbon midfielder has been highly coveted during the summer transfer window with Liverpool also said to be keeping their eyes on him and Chelsea also keen.

West Ham submitted a bid with the Portuguese club but Moyes confessed that Nunes didn’t want to join the Hammers.

Speaking ahead of the match against Nottingham Forest on Sunday Moyes admitted: “We made a bid for him but he chose not to come.”

Arteta hopes Aubameyang receives good reception

Friday 12 August 2022 14:23 , Michael Jones

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, hopes that the fans give Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a good reception if he joins Chelsea this summer and faces his old club in the Premier League.

Arteta and Auabmeyang clashed whilst the striker was at Arsenal but that didn’t stop the manager from hailing his impact on the club,

“It’s a long time since that happened, I can’t go back when there’s another series,” Arteta said of the Aubameyang captaincy saga. “I was clear and honest in my opinion. What has been done is to defend our club and be as clear, honest as we can.

“Auba is an exceptional player, he did so much for us and we have to be grateful for what he did for this club.

“I hope he does [get a good reception from Arsenal fans] because he deserve that. There are moments in your career, where the trajectory of the individual is different to the club.”

Gomez to remain in City’s first team squad

Friday 12 August 2022 14:15 , Michael Jones

Pep Guardiola says new signing Sergio Gomez will remain with the Manchester City first-team squad and compete for the left-back position.

It was thought the 21-year-old may have been loaned out once his move from Anderlecht is completed, but Guardiola confirmed he will stay in Manchester this season.

“You know the club is always working on many possibilities in many positions,” he said. “This one target is a young player, in the youth World Cup years ago the best player was Phil Foden and he was the second best player.

“He played in Spain U21, young talent for Barcelona, went to Borussia Dortmund, played in good hands under Vincent Kompany. He played well, we target him to bring him here.

“He’s for now, he will stay with us.”

England’s path to World Cup final at Qatar 2022

Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad will be hoping to make it back-to-back finals in major international competitions later this year - and this time go one step better and lift the trophy.

Four years ago England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup as the upturn in international fortunes began under Southgate, before they went the distance to the final at Euro 2020. Now in Qatar the objective will remain the same, to end the long wait since 1966 for success on the biggest stage.

Raheem Sterling can thrive with extra ‘freedom’ in Chelsea’s evolving attack

Friday 12 August 2022 13:50 , Michael Jones

As Chelsea prepare to continue their lavish spending in the final weeks of the window, Thomas Tuchel will hope to see major signs on Sunday that his most pivotal move of the window has already been made.

Raheem Sterling gets his first taste of a derby in blue against a resurgent Tottenham in what has become an underrated fixture in terms of genuine needle between the sides and sets of supporters.

Elevated in levels of animosity over the last decade amid Spurs’ rise to prominence, it is the perfect opportunity to make a statement with optimism surrounding both clubs this season.

Sterling is familiar with games of high stakes, of course, featuring in numerous Merseyside and Manchester derbies over the years.

But this provides a window into both how Sterling the player and character will influence the Blues after his debut in what was largely a scrappy, forgettable 1-0 victory against Everton, with little opportunity for Sterling to sparkle.

‘We will not panic’ says Tuchel

Friday 12 August 2022 13:43 , Michael Jones

Thomas Tuchel says that Chelsea won’t panic and try to sign players who do not fit into the direction of the club as they continue to search for new players.

“We will not panic and try to sign players of which we are not 100 per cent convinced. All signings so far are fantastic and help us.” said the Blues boss.

“It’s a day-by-day business to coach the team and not lose your head as a coach too much over what could be.

“We are ambitious and work hard to strengthen our squad further but at the same time we are calm and all the energy and ambition goes into the group that is here. We still have time.”

Contrasting styles in defensive rebuilds as Chelsea face Tottenham in season’s first top-four encounter

Friday 12 August 2022 13:28 , Michael Jones

By common consent, the Premier League’s top two last season are expected to be the Premier League’s top two this season. Man City and Liverpool were clear by a distance, again, but if that sounds dull then perhaps excitement comes behind them as the next pair of clubs increasingly look to improve enough to establish another gap between themselves and the rest of the challenging pack.

It won’t happen this weekend with Chelsea and Tottenham playing each other, meaning at least one being enforced into losing early ground.

In the short term Arsenal are comfortably best-placed to threaten to upset the quartet above them, as given the top clubs’ opening fixtures and when they match up against each other, the Gunners should reasonably be looking to be at or near the league’s summit around the half-dozen games mark. If it transpires that way, neither Antonio Conte or Thomas Tuchel will be overly concerned.

Jermain Defoe has returned to Tottenham Hotspur as an academy coach and club ambassador.

Former striker Defoe scored 143 goals for Spurs across two spells in a varied career, which ended when he retired at Sunderland in March.

“Already part of the fabric of our club thanks to his work on and off the pitch during his previous spells with us – Jermain was awarded an OBE in 2018 for his charitable work – he now begins the next phase of his career by joining our academy set-up,” Spurs said of the 39-year-old.

West Ham’s efforts to sign Nunes ‘in vain'

Friday 12 August 2022 12:54 , Michael Jones

According to reports in Portugal, West Ham United have placed a formal bid for the signing of Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes.

Newspaper Record says the Hammers offered an initial €30m plus €5m in variables but that bid fails to match the price demanded by Sporting.

West Ham’s effort was ‘in vain’ and it is said that Sporting are negotiating for €50m having already told the Premier League side this price.

Record claims the Hammers made the bid speaking directly to the Lions, unlike other clubs such as Wolves who had been using agent Jorge Mendes as an intermediary.

Nunes himself isn’t too keen on the move and wants to join a club that can offer Champions League football or else stay at Sporting where a new contract would double his wages.

Barcelona activate fourth ‘economic lever'

Friday 12 August 2022 12:45 , Michael Jones

Barcelona have sold another 25 per cent of their in-house production hub for £85m to help boost their finances in a bid to register their summer signings ahead of their first game against Rayo Vallecano.

The decision to activate their fourth ‘economic lever’ comes a month after the club signed a deal with Socios.com to sell off 25 per cent of their stake in Barca Studios last month.

The most recent deal has taken place with Orpheus Media and Barca have made the deal to offset the debt they find themselves in after years of mismanaging the books.

An official statement from the club said: ‘With this investment the strategic partners in Barca Studios show confidence in the value of the project and the future of digital content in the world of sport.’

Barcelona are currently struggling to register all their new signings before the first game of the season. However, they are confident the new deal will stump up the required funds.

The Whites have brought in Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams and Marc Roca, plus defender Rasmus Kristensen with Marsch handing them all English top-flight debuts last week as Leeds won their opening game of the season at home to Wolves.

“Physically managing the game, the pace of the game, that demands tactically being sharp and clear, and committing to the match, always is and will continue to be a challenge in the games in this league,” Marsch said.

“I think all four guys are going to get better and better.”

United set astonishing price for Rashford

Friday 12 August 2022 12:15 , Michael Jones

Manchester United do not want to sell Marcus Rashford qmid interest in the 24-year-old from Paris Saint-Germain. He won’t be leaving Old Trafford this summer especially with United’s value of him ‘in excess of £120m’.

That is a crazy price for a player who has struggled to find any kind of form over the last year. He scored just four league goals last season, down from 11 the campaign before, and looked far from his best against Brighton last weekend.

PSG have been in contact with Rashford’s representatives over a possible move as they look to add him to their immense options up front, which include Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

ESPN report that PSG would be willing to bid around £60m for the striker around half the price of United’s valuation and a more realistic estimation.

The 24-year-old is not pushing for a move and the Red Devils do not want to sell him so this may be a tactic to get PSG to back off their enquires into his future.

Kesler-Hayden circling loan move

Friday 12 August 2022 11:52 , Michael Jones

He spent the first half of last season on loan at League Two side Swindon Town before being recalled in January and joining MK Dons in League One.

Kesler-Hayden made a total of 35 league appearances in 2021/22 including 18 for Swindon and another 17 for MK Dons.

Arsenal interested in Pino

Friday 12 August 2022 11:44 , Michael Jones

Arsenal are expected to send in a bid to sign Villarreal forward Yeremy Pino with Goal reporting that an offer of £38m would be accepted by the La Liga side.

The Gunners have been strengthening their forward line this summer after signing Gabriel Jesus from Manchester to bolster their centre-forward position with the attention now shifting to the wider areas.

Pino has emerged as Arsenal’s latest target. He made his senior first team debut for Villarreal in 2020 and enjoyed a productive campaign last season, scoring six goals and notching up four assists in 31 La Liga appearances.

The 19-year-old has a release clause of around £67m (€80m) but the Yellow Submarines are said to be willing to accept a fee of around £38m (€45m) for their star man.

Murtough spotted in Turin

Friday 12 August 2022 11:37 , Michael Jones

Manchester United Football Director John Murtough has been sighted in Turin as he attempts to complete a move which will see Adrien Rabiot brought to Old Trafford.

Murtough has made another trip across the continent and will be hoping for a better result than his unsuccessful trip to Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong earlier in the summer.

It is believed that a fee in the of £15m has already been agreed with Juventus and only personal terms are standing in the way of an imminent transfer.

Rabiot’s agent and mother Veronique is famed for her approach to negotiations and earlier this week it emerged that she had made it clear she would only deal with Murtough instead of any other intermediary.

Liverpool won’t use transfer market to combat midfield injury crisis, Jurgen Klopp confirms

Friday 12 August 2022 11:30 , Michael Jones

Jurgen Klopp has insisted Liverpool’s midfield injury problems will not force him to go back into the transfer market, saying if the right player was available they would have already bought him and arguing it is not stubbornness that is stopping him from signing.

The FA Cup winners were without four of their nine midfielders when Thiago Alcantara went off injured against Fulham on Saturday but Klopp is adamant he is satisfied with the depth and ability of his options.

Thiago is likely to be out for a month while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones are also sidelined, though Naby Keita has recovered from illness and should be available for Monday’s game against Crystal Palace.

Will Newcastle replace Shelvey?

Friday 12 August 2022 11:13 , Michael Jones

Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has recently been ruled out for three months through injury prompting thoughts that the club may look to bring in a replacement before the transfer window closes in September.

When asked about transfers, manager Eddie Howe said: “I am really sorry to say no. I am sorry to keep giving you the same answers.

“I want to give you a different response but I can’t. We are no closer currently. Hopefully, the next week or so might be different.”

Howe added: “I feel we have enough to cover his absence currently. But you know football it can change very quickly. Losing Jonjo is a big blow. He has been a huge player for us over the last few season.

“Jonjo brings unique qualities to that role. Now Bruno [Guimaraes] played in that role on Saturday and did very well. We do have other players, Sean Longstaff has played there in pre-season and done very well. We have a couple of options.”

Leicester in talks for Smithies

Friday 12 August 2022 11:04 , Michael Jones

Leicester City have opened negotiations with former Cardiff and Huddersfield goalkeeper Alex Smithies over possible free transfer.

If he joins the club he’ll become Leicester’s first signing of the summer and would add to their goalkeeping options following the departure of No. 1 choice Kasper Schmeichel.

It remains to be seen if Smithies would get much game time as Brendan Rodgers has already said that Danny Ward will be the first choice keeper this season.

“He’s got the number one shirt and I think you’ve seen his presence. He deserves the opportunity to play,” Rodgers said. “We’ve got a young goalkeeper in behind him in Daniel Iversen, who’s done very well out on loan.

“Ideally if we were to bring someone else in it would be a number three so I could get our young Polish goalkeeper Jakub [Stolarczyk] out on loan.”

What does Erik ten Hag want in a striker at Manchester United?

Friday 12 August 2022 10:55 , Michael Jones

When Marnix Kolder was playing in a side managed by Erik ten Hag, his role was fairly uncomplicated. “I was the ‘escape’,” he told The Independent earlier this year. “When the ball was pressured at the back, the long ball from the keeper or the central defender came to me. I don’t know the word in English - a coat stand? The ‘kapstok‘. It’s a typical word in Dutch. The big person they can play the balls to, then you play to the midfielders or to the side.”

In other words, a target man.

Kolder was Ten Hag’s centre-forward at Go Ahead Eagles during the first year of his managerial career in 2012-13, which ended in promotion to the Eredivisie.

At 6ft 2in in height, and despite being the wrong side of 30, he scored a goal every other game in his only year working under the future Manchester United manager, before Ten Hag left the the “kick and rush” of the Eerste Divisie that Kolder describes to take charge of Bayern Munich II and work in the orbit of Pep Guardiola.

Everton’s Gibson joins Bristol Rovers

Friday 12 August 2022 10:45 , Michael Jones

Everton youngster, Lewis Gibson, has joined League One side Bristol Rovers on a season-long loan after agreeing a new one-year contract with Everton until the end of June 2023.

He signed for Everton from Newcastle United in July 2017 and played a key role in Everton Under-23s’ Premier League 2 and Premier League Cup double in 2018/19.

Last term, Gibson returned to League One for a season-long loan with Sheffield Wednesday, although injury limited the defender to six appearances.

Lijnders on signing Darwin

Friday 12 August 2022 10:38 , Michael Jones

Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders explained why Liverpool decided to splash the cash and bring Darwin Nunez to the club for £67.5m this summer.

“We followed Darwin for a long time. Our scouting team followed him, made reports, compiled videos and kept him in their sights.” said the 39-year-old.

“Then there is a moment when you’re sitting in a recruitment meeting with Jurgen (Klopp), Julian (Ward) and Mike (Gordon) and it’s like ‘OK, let’s go!

“He’s a centre-forward that likes to drift. He’s not a fixed No.9, and that was something we think can be good to open up spaces for others as well, which is something we think we can improve.

“Is it a gamble? Maybe, but the most important thing for the player is that he feels from the players and the staff that football isn’t a perfect game.

“We deal with moments where things don’t work out well, and that we don’t lose confidence and trust in the player. We don’t judge players on one game or one moment, never.”

No more incomings at Liverpool?

Friday 12 August 2022 10:30 , Michael Jones

Jurgen Klopp has appeared to rule out Liverpool signing any more players this summer despite several injuries in his squad and a seeming lack a depth in certain areas.

“If there would be the right player, we would have done it, we would do it, but we have had a lot of conversations already and it doesn’t look like it will happen,” said the Reds boss.

“I’m happy with the strength, size, and quality of my squad – but we have injuries. There are different solutions for it – one of them is the transfer market, but it only makes sense if you can bring in the right player.

“If there is the right solution for us, we would have done it already. We are not stubborn, it’s just about the right thing to do.”

Chelsea and Leicester remain apart in Fofana valuation

Friday 12 August 2022 10:12 , Michael Jones

Chelsea and Leicester are still discussing the valuation of Wesley Fofana. The Blues want to bring the defender to Stamford Bridge this summer but are yet to meet the Foxes valuation price despite submitting two bids for the 21-year-old.

Chelsea’s second bid was worth around £60m but Leicester are only interested in an offer close to the record fee paid for a defender - the £80m that Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire three years ago.

Sky Sports News reportsthat Chelsea are preparing a bigger offer in the coming days which will be much closer to Leicester’s valuation but may not reach the heights of Maguire’s transfer.

Leicester don’t want to sell Fofana as they feel his value will only increase in the next few years but Thomas Tuchel has made this transfer a priority this summer so it may yet get over the line.

Foxes boss, Brendan Rodgers, said: “Even now, it would be late in terms of looking to get in replacements, but it’s certainly something that the later it goes on then the more difficult it becomes.”

Rashford not for sale

Paris Saint-Germain are unlikely to follow up their initial interest in Marcus Rashford as Manchester United‘s position is the forward is not for sale.

Rashford’s representatives are believed to have held talks with PSG last week but United know Rashford is committed to the club and effectively has two years left on his contract - one year plus an option for another year.

The 24-year-old will not be moving anytime soon but things could potentially change if he doesn’t rekindle his previous good form under new manager Erik ten Hag.

Newcastle looking at Gordon?

Friday 12 August 2022 09:54 , Michael Jones

Eddie Howe has been looking to strengthen his Newcastle squad as the North East side seeks to improve on last season’s 11th place finish in the Premier League this term.

According to The Athletic one of the targets for the Saudi-backed club is Everton’s Anthony Gordon with sporting dircetor Dan Ashworth said to be in contact with the Merseyside club over a possible deal for the 21-year-old winger.

Gordon still has three years left on his deal at Goodison Park and has stepped up to lead the line thanks to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury and Richarlison’s departure. The Toffees have a strong negotiating position and it is hard to see the club sanction such a move.

However, Newcastle United now have massive financial firepower and if they are willing to splash the cash for Gordon over the final two weeks of the transfer window it is not out of the question that the winger could make the move to St James’ Park.

According to The Athletic, Davis is having a medical ahead of the switch to Vicarage Road which could see him depart the Midlands on a permanent basis through an option included in the deal.

However, the move to Watford is expected to be completed.

Eric Bailly attracting plenty of interest

Friday 12 August 2022 09:28 , Luke Baker

Man United defender Eric Bailly is attracting plenty of interest from clubs as he seems set for an inevitable Old Trafford exit.

Bailly is an outcast at the Red Devils, with no place in new coach Erik ten Hag’s plan, which means that despite signing a new contract last season, he is now free to leave the club.

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham, Fulham, Sevilla, AC Milan and Roma have all enquired about a loan deal, yet Monaco and Marseille are the frontrunners - with both willing to offer Bailly a permanent exit.

Sport also say that Blues boss Thomas Tuchel has put pressure on new owner Todd Boehly to make a good offer for the Gabon international - who Tuchel worked with at Borussia Dortmund - but Barca are more minded to sell Memphis Depay in terms of their attacking players.

Could Arsenal and Manchester City be engaging in a swap of left-backs this summer?

Rumours are going round that the reigning Premier League champions are plotting a late swoop to sign Gunners defender Kieran Tierney following Oleksandr Zinchenko’s move to the Emirates Stadium.

City have agreed an £11m deal to sign 21-year-old Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez but are still in the market for another, more experienced left-sided full-back who can instantly contribute.

Zinchenko moved to north London for £32m last month and according to The Daily Mirror and 90min, City could turn to Tierney, a proven Premier League left-back, rather than other players with little to no experience of playing in England.

Jesse Marsch backs Leeds’ high-intensity style to survive UK heatwave

Jesse Marsch believes his record in America shows that Leeds United don’t need to abandon their high-energy blueprint to win in the British heatwave.

Leeds’ pressing game relies on intensity and, under first Marcelo Bielsa and then Marsch, they made the most sprints in the Premier League last season.

But the American is confident their style of play can work against Southampton on Saturday, when temperatures are expected to reach 90 degrees, and he took heart from New York Red Bulls’ winning habit in extreme heat during his time in charge.

There is momentum behind the Lionesses’ plans to change the game

It took just seconds for Leah Williamson to make the switch. From creating history by becoming the first England captain since Bobby Moore to win a major international tournament, her head immediately turned to the future while everyone else was losing theirs at Wembley.

“The legacy of this team is winning and this is the start of the journey,” Williamson repeated. It crystalised in a moment just what the Lionesses were playing for and what they had achieved when Chloe Kelly’s goal in extra time crossed the line.

A week has now passed since England’s victory over Germany, watched by the biggest crowd in the history of the European Championships and the 17 million that tuned in from around the country.

There have been celebrations in Trafalgar Square, sunglasses hiding hungover eyes to make this squad all the more endearing, congratulations from the Queen and heroic homecomings. Giddy on the success, England announced a friendly against the United States at Wembley in early October. Demand for the match saw the ticketing website crash and it was sold out in 24 hours.

Chelsea left wondering what might’ve been as Timo Werner coup ends in failure

Thursday 11 August 2022 18:15 , Michael Jones

It was day two of Project Restart in the Premier League. As grounds were emptied, belts were tightened. Or most of them, anyway. Chelsea took advantage of others’ inability to spend, turning to the bank of Roman.

They activated Timo Werner’s release clause at RB Leipzig. It was a time when deploying Roman Abramovich’s funds seemed more of a legitimate ploy. And, as budgets were frozen amid uncertainty elsewhere, Chelsea stole a march on the European elite by snapping up the Bundesliga’s two most coveted young talents.

A seemingly Real Madrid-bound Kai Havertz was redirected to Stamford Bridge. Werner, who had long looked headed for Liverpool, joined his compatriot in London.

Bournemouth head coach Scott Parker is confident “aggressive” Argentina defender Marcos Senesi can help keep his squad on the front foot in their battle for Premier League survival.

Senesi completed his switch from Dutch club Feyenoord in a reported £12.6million deal earlier this week and could be in contention to make his debut in Saturday’s trip to champions Manchester City.

The 25-year-old is the fifth summer recruit to bolster Parker’s options and the centre-half will offer some extra defensive options, with midfielder Jefferson Lerma having been deployed in a makeshift back three for the win over Aston Villa.

Will Fulham sign Willian?

Thursday 11 August 2022 16:21 , Michael Jones

Sky Sports’ South American football expert Tim Vickery believes that the former Chelsea and Arsenal star could be returning to the Premier League and looks set to join Fulham.

“The plan at the moment is Fulham. Willian has torn up his contract with Corinthians, that was agreed yesterday.” said Vickery on the Transfer Show.

“They have been knocked out of the Copa Libertadores and it hasn’t been a happy return for him.

“He went to the police station to denounce abuse he was suffering from his own club’s fans on social media. It has been hard for his family as well.

“He’s been negotiating with Fulham for a few days and he has business interests in London. He enjoyed his time there very much. It looks as if Willian is on his way to Fulham.”

Limited game time at City forced Chelsea move says Sterling

Thursday 11 August 2022 16:14 , Michael Jones

Raheem Sterling has been opening up about his summer move from Manchester City to Chelsea and the reasons why he decided to make the switch saying that limited game time at the Premier League champions played a part in his decision.

“The move came about, like anything as a person you strive to achieve, and I just felt my time at City was getting limited on playing time for different reasons,” said Sterling, “I couldn’t afford to waste that time. So I needed to keep that same level and a fresh challenge.

“It’s something that since 17 I’d been a regular starting, so to get to a peak time in my career, not to play regularly is something I wouldn’t accept. My personality is to try to fight and change the scenario, but it didn’t happen and that’s it. This was the option that was tailor-made to my personal goals, and with my family as well and the direction the club is going in.

“It’s [Chelsea] a team that’s competing and only going to get better. With the new ownership as well, it made a lot of sense. It was tough of course with the time I spent at City and there’s lots of memories and top moments.

“But the year and a bit that I was in and out of the team taught me a lot about myself, made me value a lot of things and I tried to get things in order.

“It was a difficult decision but you have to make the decision that’s best for yourself. It does feel like coming home, coming back to London; it’s been a long time that I’ve been away, since about 14 or 15.”
