The 24-year-old Brazil international has made a stunning impact in the Premier League since his £35million January arrival at St James’ Park from Lyon, but has been linked with a move to the Spanish capital in recent days should Casemiro head for Manchester United.

Asked if he could contemplate allowing Guimaraes to leave, Magpies head coach Howe said: “No, absolutely not.

“We’re trying to build a squad here that we feel can take the club to be successful over the next few years, and we want to build that squad and enhance the group, not take away our best players.”

Ndombele joins Napoli on loan for rest of season

Friday 19 August 2022 17:12 , Jamie Braidwood

Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele has joined Napoli on loan for the rest of the season, with an option to make the move permanent.

Frenchman Ndombele joined Spurs from Lyon during the summer of 2019, going on to make a total of 91 appearances and scoring 10 goals.

After finding first-team chances limited under Antonio Conte, Ndombele, 25, spent the second half of last season back in Ligue 1 with Lyon.

A club statement from the Serie A side read: “Napoli announces that it has acquired the sporting performances of Tanguy Ndombele from Tottenham Hotspur on a temporary basis with the right of redemption (a permanent transfer).”

Gerrard confident Carlos will play ‘big chunk’ of season after Achilles surgery

Friday 19 August 2022 17:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard expects Diego Carlos to play a “big chunk” of the season after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Summer signing Carlos has had successful surgery on the injury he sustained on his second competitive Villa appearance against Everton last weekend.

The Brazilian, a reported £26million recruit from Sevilla, is set to be missing for several months, but Gerrard insists the 29-year-old will still play a significant role this season.

“It’s certainly a blow to lose a player of his importance,” Gerrard said ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Crystal Palace.

Less than two weeks remain of the transfer window and Gerrard says he is mulling over whether defensive additions are needed in light of Carlos’ injury.

Gerrard said: “We’re having talks behind the scenes to decide what we do. I don’t think there’s an urgent need (to make a signing).”

Mikel Arteta ‘very confident’ Bukayo Saka will sign new Arsenal deal

Friday 19 August 2022 16:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Mikel Arteta is “very confident” that England forward Bukayo Saka will sign a new deal at Arsenal sooner rather than later.

The 20-year-old has two years remaining on his current contract at the Emirates Stadium and continues to be a vital part of Arteta’s side.

Saka finished as Arsenal’s top goal-scorer last season as he rose above the racist abuse he suffered after missing the deciding penalty in England’s Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy.

Having joined the academy aged seven, Saka made his first-team debut under head coach Unai Emery in 2019 but has flourished under Arteta.

Asked about a new deal for Saka, the Spaniard replied: “I am very confident that we as a club and Bukayo, his family, his agent, everybody, we are very much aligned in what we want to achieve. And now it is about putting it on a piece of paper.”

But Guardiola has been told that is it with less than two weeks left in the transfer window.

Asked if their business was done, he said: “Apparently yes. But if someone moves or there is a problem we don’t expect maybe it happens, but apparently it is done.”

Everton rejected an offer, thought to be of up to £45 million, for the 21-year-old this week – but while Lampard believes Gordon has a huge value and is worth more than some players who have gone for high fees, he insisted that was not a negotiating ploy to get Chelsea to raise their bid.

Friday 19 August 2022 14:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Chelsea remain confident as they continue to target Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Wesley Fofana and Anthony Gordon and Thomas Tuchel confirmed the club are still looking at new signings.

“We work together on reinforcements but it’s never easy. We can’t just wish for something and it will happen. As long as the transfer window is open there are always possibilities. The focus is on what we have, not what we could have.

“I believe we can compete with this group, but it’s one thing to compete once a week and another thing to compete 60 times a year, three times a week. You need a strong group.

“We are still active in the market and know what can be possible. We are looking for high quality and personality that suits our group and squad.”

Friday 19 August 2022 13:15 , Jamie Braidwood

The Portuguese has made clear his desire to leave the club amid a disastrous summer on and off the pitch, culminating in Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Brentford.

Ronaldo’s behaviour in that game formed part of the discussions the United staff had in the aftermath, as they attempt to work out how to navigate the team back to good form.

There is increasing debate within the club over whether it would be better to get rid of the megastar, although the hierarchy have so far been completely resistant.
