Manchester City will target a contract renewal for one of their highly-rated midfield targets this summer, amid interest having been registered in the player.

That stance concerns the future of Alex Robertson, who returns to Manchester City for conversations over his future and pre-season training with the club after a loan spell with Portsmouth last campaign.

Across 27 appearances in all competitions for the south coast club last season, the 21-year-old Australia international managed to record a goal and four assists under manager John Mousinho.

Such were the standard of performances set by Robertson that the Portsmouth boss has outlined the club’s desire to re-sign him, explaining earlier this summer, “He’s enjoyed his time here. We’ve spoken and said if there’s a possibility we can bring him back, we’d love to.”

But Pompey will perhaps unsurprisingly face intense competition for the player’s signature this summer, and one such candidate emerging in the race for Alex Robertson has now formally registered interest.

According to the information of WalesOnline’s Glenn Williams, Cardiff City have now registered an interest in signing Manchester City midfielder Alex Robertson, who impressed during a loan spell with Portsmouth last season.

While it is claimed that the Championship side prefer a permanent deal this summer, with the player’s Etihad Stadium contract expiring in 2025, Manchester City were said to be considering whether a new contract and another loan agreement might suit them better.

Alex Robertson first signed for Manchester City as an Under-15, progressing into the club’s Elite Development Squad after signing his first professional contract with the club in July 2020.

Aside from his successful spell with Portsmouth last season, Robertson’s only other loan experience was spending the first half of the 2021/22 campaign on loan in the Scottish Premiership with Ross County.

A first senior international call-up came in March 2023 when Robertson was selected as part of the Australia squad for a two-part friendly series against Ecuador.

At present, it remains to be seen whether Alex Robertson will be selected as part of Manchester City’s pre-season tour squad for their jaunt in the United States later this summer, with four matches awaiting the club along the east coast.
