Manchester United fans had likely expected that Mason Greenwood’s situation would be closer to being resolved at this stage of the window.

Yet, there remain question marks over his future and whether it lies with Getafe or a new suitor on a permanent deal.

Reports have strongly suggested that the Red Devils remain in the same stance they took last year – that he would continue his career restart away from Old Trafford. Ex-senior figures at the club had planned for the forward to return in the 2023/2024 campaign, but widespread backlash from supporters, neutrals, journalists, pundits and former players led to the board performing a U-turn.

As such, he has not played in the red shirt since being charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in October 2022. These charges were subsequently dropped in February 2023.

The 22-year-old’s eight goals and six assists in 33 La Liga appearances have led to him garnering interest from a host of teams across Europe, namely Juventus, Napoli, Lazio, Atletico Madrid and Marseille, while Getafe are also keen on keeping him for at least another season.

It’s thought that United will demand a fee of around £40 million to sanction Greenwood’s exit, which would go down as a straight profit due to him being an academy graduate.

Serie A move unlikely for Greenwood as it stands, says transfer expert

However, such financial demands may rule numerous teams out of the race. La Liga expert Matteo Moretto has shared his understanding of the situation in his exclusive Daily Briefing column, writing: “A lot of rumours have come out linking Mason Greenwood with a move to Italy, but the reality is that he is no closer to a move there than anywhere else.

“It is true that clubs like Lazio or Juventus have enquired about him – but just to gather information on the potential conditions of a deal, salary, price and so on.

Lazio spoke with Manchester United about commissions, conditions and the like, but that’s where it ended. Currently, my information is that it is very difficult for Greenwood to end up in Italy next season – I see him going elsewhere.”
