Trade Value Rankings: The Top 20 point guards in the NBA

SHOOTING GUARDSSMALL FORWARDS /
POWER FORWARDSCENTERSTOP 100

Luka Doncic (Dallas)

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $215,159,700 till 2026-27
Agent: Bill Duffy

Doncic is having a historic offensive start to the season averaging a ridiculous 34.4 points per game. He’s at times looked like a one-man show for Dallas’ offense and has pushed them to a strong start with the league’s second-best offense.

Ja Morant (Memphis)

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $206,419,440 till 2027-28
Agent: Jim Tanner

Morant is looking like an MVP candidate this season as he’s led a Grizzlies team missing Jaren Jackson Jr. to a nice start. He would probably be much higher on this list if not for the occasional lower-body injuries he suffers, but thankfully he’s been mostly durable in his career.

Stephen Curry (Golden State)

John Hefti-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $215,353,662 till 2025-26
Agent: Jeff Austin

The Warriors are off to a surprisingly bad start but Curry and the rest of the starters aren’t responsible for that. He’s actually off to an amazing start statistically and if his production holds up, he would have the best regular season of his career. The two timelines appear to be clashing and it’s possible the Warriors make some difficult decisions with their young players and trade them to save their season.

Trae Young (Atlanta)

Larry Robinson-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $215,159,700 till 2026-27
Agent: Omar Wilkes

Young is one of the league’s most impactful offensive players. The Hawks haven’t been challenged much this season thus far but they’ve at least taken care of business against teams they’re clearly better than. It’s possible his trade value nears the top of these rankings in the next several years.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City)

Michael McLoone-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $179,220,000 till 2026-27
Agent: Thaddeus Foucher and Joe Smith

Gilgeous-Alexander is looking like an All-Star caliber player as he’s averaging 31.5 points per game on very strong efficiency. He’s even improved as a defensive playmaker.

Damian Lillard (Portland)

Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $258,694,291 till 2026-27
Agent: Aaron Goodwin

Lillard has shown he still is one of the best players in the league with his hot start to the season after missing most of last season. He should still hold immense trade value but the Blazers’ good start to the year will probably keep him in Portland.

Cade Cunningham (Detroit)

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $21,608,160 till 2023-24
Agent: Jeff Schwartz and James Dunleavy

Cunningham likely would’ve been much higher on this list had he started his rookie year stronger. He’s been given the keys to the Pistons offense but they’ve struggled to score as they hold the league’s fourth-worst offense.

LaMelo Ball (Charlotte)

Nell Redmond-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $19,524,555 till 2023-24
Agent: Raymond Brothers

Ball silenced the doubters after leading a mediocre roster to two straight trips to the play-in tournament. Sidelined due to injury for a while, he lost a bunch of spots in our ranking.

Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana)

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $10,023,555 till 2023-24
Agent: Aaron Mintz and Dave Spahn

Haliburton is headling Indiana’s offense, which currently ranks as the seventh-best in the league. He’s already looking like one of their cornerstones and his trajectory should raise his trade value much higher than the price they gave up for him.

Tyrese Maxey (Philadelphia)

Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $7,070,800 till 2023-24
Agent: Rich Paul

The Sixers are extremely fortunate not only to have a third potential star in Maxey but to have him earn less than $3 million in the next two seasons as they navigate challenges building the roster. He’s off to an unbelievable start to the season averaging 22.8 points while shooting 40.8 percent from three.

Darius Garland (Cleveland)

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $203,220,795 till 2027-28
Agent: Rich Paul and Lucas Newton

Garland’s ascent from a good starting point guard to an All-Star has already made him invaluable. He should slowly rise up these rankings over the next several seasons after receiving a maximum contract extension this summer.

Jrue Holiday (Milwaukee)

Michael McLoone-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $108,476,241 till 2024-25
Agent: Jason Glushon

Holiday might be higher on this list if not for the recent extension he signed that will have him earning close to $40 million at age 35. In the meantime, he remains an All-Star caliber player with a strong impact on winning playoff games.

De'Aaron Fox (Sacramento)

John Hefti-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $134,896,800 till 2025-26
Agent: Chris Gaston

Fox is one of the biggest risers in these rankings with the strong start he’s gotten to this season. He’s averaging near career highs in scoring and three-pointers and is having by far his most efficient shooting year. He’s starting to look like the maximum-salaried player the Kings made him.

Jalen Brunson (New York)

Kyle Ross-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $104,000,000 till 2025-26
Agent: Aaron Mintz and Sam Rose

Brunson brings some much-needed stability to the Knicks’ point guard rotation. He has kept them solid on both ends and is one of their best scorers, often buying them buckets when they need them the most.

Fred VanVleet (Toronto)

Nick Turchiaro-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $44,074,074 till 2023-24
Agent: Brian Jungreis

VanVleet is due for a raise, likely starting during the 2023-24 season, either via an extension or free agency. Should the Raptors decide to go in another direction, they could probably get a haul for him after the All-Star season he just had.

Chris Paul (Phoenix)

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $44,200,000 till 2023-24
Agent: Steve Heumann and Ty Sullivan

Paul has been less aggressive with his shot, which has resulted in inconsistent shooting nights and a significant drop in efficiency and usage. Despite this, there still could be teams out there willing to give up positive assets for the 37-year-old veteran.

Josh Giddey (Oklahoma City)

Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $12,874,440 till 2023-24
Agent: Alex Saratsis

Giddey seems to be part of the next great Thunder team alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and whoever they select in this year’s draft. He should rise through these rankings over the next few seasons.

Marcus Smart (Boston)

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $77,087,996 till 2025-26
Agent: Jason Glushon

Smart is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year who helped lead a historically great to defense to the Finals. Their defense hasn’t been at that level to start the season but they should get a lot better with the eventual return of Robert Williams III.

Jamal Murray (Denver)

Daniel Dunn-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $101,500,200 till 2024-25
Agent: Mike George and Jeff Schwartz

Murray would probably be 20-30 spots higher had he played last season. A healthy bounce-back year could put him back in that range.

Terry Rozier (Charlotte)

Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

Guaranteed money left: $94,539,789 till 2025-26
Agent: Aaron Turner

It’s possible Rozier’s trade value declined a bit after capitalizing on a four-year, $96.3 million extension last offseason. His value could be displayed if the Hornets decide to trade him to clear room for new contracts for LaMelo Ball and PJ Washington.
