Tottenham concluded their pre-season preparations in disappointing fashion as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Roma. Roger Ibanez’s first-half header proved to be the difference in Israel as Jose Mourinho came up against his former side, Spurs suffering their first defeat of the summer.

It was a strong lineup as expected from Antonio Conte, with the majority of those starting against Roma likely to do the same next weekend. Mourinho’s side started quickly though and very nearly took the lead through new signing Paulo Dybala inside the opening minute. The goal did come for Roma, just before the half hour mark, as Ibanez powered home a header from a corner and that was all the Serie A side needed.

Attention now turns to the serious business, when Tottenham welcome Southampton to north London to get their Premier League campaign up and running next Saturday.

Obviously can’t read too much into a friendly, but Conte will be frustrated to go into the new season after a stumbling display like tonight’s.

Conte ready to stay up

It was music to Tottenham fans' ears yesterday when Antonio Conte suggested he could remain as manager for "many years".

The Italian has long been coy over his future at Spurs, with this current deal expiring at the end of the season - though with the option of a further year.

Speaking to reporters in Israel ahead of tonight's friendly, Conte said: "As I've said before, our project, our plan is to try to become competitive, more than the past, but you know very well that in football you cannot build something important in one day, one month, one year.”

Conte has his squad looking fit and fresh and will give Roma a good test in Israel. Spurs are slightly ahead of their opponents in pre-season - the new Serie A campaign starts a week later than the Premier League - so should be able to keep the Italians at arm’s length.
