Tottenham’s 100 per cent home record this season came to an end as they were well beaten by Newcastle. Spurs have now suffered back-to-back losses after their defeat against Manchester United and another flat display raises doubts over their progress under Antonio Conte.

Newcastle went ahead after 31 minutes following a nightmare moment from Lloris. The goalkeeper raceed out of his box to get onto a long ball but ran into Wilson, who turned and lobbed the ball into the empty net from 30 yards. Spurs were furious but VAR looked to see if Wilson fouled Lloris and the goal stood.

Lloris also had a hand in the second goal when Almiron doubled the lead on 41 minutes. This time, Lloris kicked the ball out to Sean Longstaff, who headed it into the path of Almiron and ran into the area, beat a defender and slotted under Lloris.

Spurs pulled a goal back on 53 minutes when a corner was flicked on and Kane was there at the back post to stoop down low and head into an empty net from two yards. But Newcastle held on for a win that takes them above Chelsea and into fourth.

Conte: If someone doesn’t want to listen it’s not my problem

19:09 , Giuseppe Muro

Spurs boss Antonio Conte to Sky Sports: “Before the situtation [first goal] we created many chances to score. Maybe if we had better finishing we could score. Then it happened this situation, I don’t want to comment on the referee decision. I don’t want to comment.

“Not so good. We conceded a goal from a long ball. In our best moment Newcastle scored their first goal. Their second goal came from a counter-attack. Then it was really difficult to come back.

“We tried. We scored one goal. We didn’t do good enough.

“We are doing our best in every moment. Today the commitment was really high. We have to face a difficult situation for us. When you don’t have three or four players in the squad you’re in trouble.

“We have to manage very well this situation and overcome it together.

“When you play every three days you need to have a deep, strong squad. We have only just started our process. We are playing in the Champions League. We’re trying to improve our situation step by step. You need time and patience. I want to be honest. With my experience, we are doing well but we need the time and patience.

“If we played one game every six or seven days, we could fight for something important. To play every three days we have to continue to build our path and have patience. If someone thinks we can invent the win and do a miracle, we need to continue to work.

“If someone doesn’t want to listen it’s not my problem. Fingers crossed we don’t have many injuries. Many injuries can affect our season.

“When you start this type of process, I can tell the line to follow. We have to finish this period of games and then in January we’ll see where we are, which improvement we need. Together with the club. The club knows very well. I was very clear in the summer. If we want to play in the Premier League and Champions League you need to improve the squad. When you play, play, play, injuries happen. When three to five players are out it becomes a problem for a team like Tottenham.”

Callum Wilson on the opening goal

18:55 , Giuseppe Muro

Asked by Sky Sports if he thought the goal would be disallowed, Wilson said: “No, of course not.

“I had every right to go for the ball having seen the goalkeeper steaming out. I’m challenging, he’s challenging. Sometimes the goalkeepers get too much love from the referee and too quick to give fouls but he’s dived into me. A nice goal.”

Howe: It’s a big win

18:53 , Giuseppe Muro

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to Sky Sports: “It was a big win. We were determined to come here and be positive. Great display from us. We deserved the win.

“My players deserve all the credit for how we attack the game. We executed the game plan really well. It wasn’t without problems - they have world-class players.

“They had a few long-range shots and dangerous counter-attacks early on. Once we solved that we were OK.”

On the opening goal: “I haven’t seen it again. It looked like the two players came together. Why should that foul go in the way of the defending team?”

“Miggy [Almiron] has always been a fantastic player. He’s just adding goals to his game. When he’s in front of goal you think he’s going to score. His performance today was excellent.”

Spurs’ 100 percent home record brought to an end by Newcastle. Spurs were much better than Wednesday but undone by a couple of really poor pieces of defending in the first half, and couldn’t recover.

Full-time: Tottenham 1-2 Newcastle

18:24 , Giuseppe Muro

Another defeat at the end of a bad week for Spurs.

18:20 , Giuseppe Muro

90+1 mins: Spurs in truth haven’t done enough in this second. Newcastle have looked pretty comfortable.

18:18 , Giuseppe Muro

90 mins: Five added minutes.

18:15 , Giuseppe Muro

86 mins: Big chances for Spurs! Dier glances a header inches wide from a Perisic cross. The flag was up anyway but that was so close from Dier. It’s getting desperate for Spurs. Can they find an equaliser?

18:09 , Giuseppe Muro

81 mins: A double change for Spurs. Doherty and Davies on for and Lenglet and Sanchez.

18:07 , Giuseppe Muro

77 mins: Spurs push forward and Son has a shot blocked by Burn.

18:06 , Giuseppe Muro

75 mins: Spurs have had just two shots in the second half. When they are chasing the game at home that just isn’t good enough.

18:03 , Giuseppe Muro

71 mins: Dier slides in on Joelinton and wins the ball. Both players are hurt but are back on their feet.

17:59 , Giuseppe Muro

70 mins: Into the final 20 minutes and this game is still in the balance.

17:57 , Giuseppe Muro

68 mins: Good play from Kane, who finds Perisic and shit shot from the angle is saved. He should have done better there. Encouraging signs for Spurs though.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:56 , Giuseppe Muro

Think Skipp’s performance was very encouraging (especially considering he hadn’t started since January) and suggests he deserves a lot more minutes in future. He brought bite and vibrancy to the Spurs midfield, and was always looking to play the ball forward.

17:56 , Giuseppe Muro

66 mins: Schar has shot from range but Lloris saves.

17:54 , Giuseppe Muro

65 mins: Another second for Spurs. Lucas Moura is on for Skipp

17:53 , Giuseppe Muro

Kane is the fourth player to score 10+ goals in nine consecutive Premier League seasons, after Sergio Aguero, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard.

17:52 , Giuseppe Muro

63 mins: Son whips in an outswinging corner that Kane jumps to meet but the ball had swung out of play. Frustration for the home fans.

17:50 , Giuseppe Muro

60 mins: First change for Spurs. Persic is on for Sessegnon, who had just been booked for fouling Almiron.

17:49 , Giuseppe Muro

58 mins: That goal has lifted the whole stadium but Newcastle almost re-establish that two-goal lead as Willock cuts in from the left and curls a cross-shot which almost goes in at the back post.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:48 , Giuseppe Muro

Kane is such a threat at the far post from corners, and Spurs have scored a similar goal against Wolves this season. It’s a great response from Conte’s side and the stadium is rocking now.

GOAL! Tottenham 1-2 Newcastle | Harry Kane 53’

17:44 , Giuseppe Muro

Game on! A corner is flicked on by Newcastle defender Botman and Kane is there at the back post to stoop down low and head into an empty net from two yards. VAR check for offside but the goal stands.

17:41 , Giuseppe Muro

51 mins: Newcastle want a penalty after the ball hits Royal in the arm but it’s not given. From the resulting corner Newcastle after another chance. Spurs need a goal but Newcastle look more likely to add a third.

17:38 , Giuseppe Muro

49 mins: Already two Newcaste corners in the second half. Spurs can’t get the ball at the moment.

17:36 , Giuseppe Muro

47 mins: Spurs look shell-shocked. Newcastle are enjoying an early spell of pressure at the start of the second half.

17:34 , Giuseppe Muro

46 mins: Back underway at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Can Spurs find a response in the second half? No changes from either side at the break.

17:28 , Giuseppe Muro

Sudden and torrential sideways rain sends supporters in the lower tier of the North Stand running for cover at half-time.

You wonder if things could turn toxic in the second half if Spurs do not improve.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:22 , Giuseppe Muro

Spurs were energised and played well for half an hour but lost focus after Wilson’s controversial opener, and now face an almighty challenge to get anything from this match. Not much on the bench either.

Half-time: Tottenham 0-2 Newcastle

17:19 , Giuseppe Muro

Boos ring round the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at the end of a nightmare half for Spurs.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:18 , Giuseppe Muro

Good as it was, Almiron’s goal a nightmare for Spurs. From Lloris’ poor kick to Sessegnon’s weak challenge and Lenglet’s flatfooted attempt to stop the winger. Spurs were playing well but now facing a mountain to climb in the second half.

17:17 , Giuseppe Muro

Here’s the incident for the first goal. What do you think?

GOAL! Tottenham 0-2 Newcastle | Miguel Almiron 41’

17:11 , Giuseppe Muro

Another bad moment for Lloris but take nothing away from a brilliant goal by Almiron

Lloris kicks the ball out to Longstaff, who heads it into the path of Almiron, who runs into the area, beats a defender before slotting the ball under Lloris.

This is turning into a nightmare afternoon for Spurs.

Newcastle are going into the Champions League places as things stand.

17:09 , Giuseppe Muro

Wilson has now scored in all his three Premier League appearances for Newcastle against Spurs.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

17:08 , Giuseppe Muro

There was definitely a case that Wilson blocked Lloris with his arm but I think the goalkeeper has to be stronger there. He was looking for a free-kick but if that was an outfield player, it would have been a very soft foul.

GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle | Callum Wilson 31’

17:02 , Giuseppe Muro

Spurs are behind and it’s a nightmare moment for Lloris.

Lloris races out of his box to get onto a long ball but runs into Wilson, who turns and lobs the ball into the empty net from 30 yards.

Spurs are furious. VAR looks to see if Wilson fouled Lloris but the goal stands.

16:58 , Giuseppe Muro

26 mins: Kane picks up the loose ball but his shot from range is blocked.

16:56 , Giuseppe Muro

23 mins: Wilson goes down holding his foot after his follow through after a shot catches the studs of Lenglet. A painful one but no penalty.

16:53 , Giuseppe Muro

22 mins: Good play from Spurs, who break at pace, Skipp squares for Sessegnon and hit shot is blocked behind for a corner.

16:50 , Giuseppe Muro

19 mins: Almost a horrible moment for Dier, who concedes a cheap corner with a wayward backpass to Lloris that goes inches wide of the post for a Newcastle corner, which is cleared. That was almost an own goal.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

16:49 , Giuseppe Muro

Two of Conte’s five changes may have been enforced but Spurs look energised. There’s a zip to their passing and plenty of encouraging running off the ball. It’s early days but already a world away from Wednesday’s dismal display at Old Trafford.

16:46 , Giuseppe Muro

14 mins: Bissouma shoots well over from range.

16:46 , Giuseppe Muro

13 mins: Apart from that penalty scare, it's been all Tottenham so far.

16:44 , Giuseppe Muro

12 mins: Spurs are having real joy on the break and Kane is causing havoc for Newcastle. The England captain has been at his creative best so far and is pulling the strings for Spurs.

16:42 , Giuseppe Muro

10 mins: Huge chance for Spurs! Kane slides a ball through to Son, he goes one-on-one with Pope, tries to dink it over the Newcastle goalkeeper and has his effort saved. Spurs should be ahead. Son would expect to score there.

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

16:40 , Giuseppe Muro

Son has the bit between his teeth this evening. The Korean already had three shots from range, one of which dropped agonisingly on to the roof of Pope’s net. It’s been a lively start for both sides, with Newcastle threatening down the right through former Spur Trippier.

16:40 , Giuseppe Muro

8 mins: Newcastle's midfield three are dominating Tottenham's but, as always, Spurs look a real threat on the break.

16:38 , Giuseppe Muro

7 mins: Son takes aim again, this time from range with his left foot and the ball flies over. That was ambitious.

16:36 , Giuseppe Muro

4 mins: Danger as Joelinton gets in behind the Spurs defence and is bundled over from Royal. The referee says it’s just a coming together and referee Jarred Gillett says no penalty. VAR Stuart Attwell agrees and the game continues. That was a concern for Spurs how easily Joelinton got in behind Royal.

16:33 , Giuseppe Muro

2 mins: Another chance for Son at the end of another brilliant counter from Spurs. The Korean bends one onto the roof of the net. Encouraging start from the home side though.

16:31 , Giuseppe Muro

1 mins: A fast start from Spurs. They counter at pace and Son forces Pope into an early save.

Kick-off

16:30 , Giuseppe Muro

We’re underway at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium! Can Spurs bounce back from their defeat against Manchester United?

16:23 , Giuseppe Muro

Kick-off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is now under 10 minutes away...

Conte: Today is a good opportunity for Skipp

16:20 , Giuseppe Muro

Antonio Conte has been speaking ahead of the game: “This is a good opportunity for Skippy. Last season until January he played two months in an amazing way and then he had these serious injuries and struggled to recover.

“We are talking about a young player, today he has to play with Bissouma, another new player who is trying to come into our idea of football.”

16:14 , Giuseppe Muro

Antonio Conte has confirmed Cristian Romero or Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg have minor injuries.

The pair will continue to be assessed “day-by-day” ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League game against Sporting.

The full-time whistle has blown in the early kick-off at St Mary’s and Arsenal have been held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton.

So Spurs have a chance to close to within two points of the Gunners this afternoon.

15:54 , Giuseppe Muro

Kieran Trippier is back at Tottenham today.

He has created more chances from set play than any other player in the Premier League this season (16), and more chances overall than any other defender (26).

Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

15:49 , Giuseppe Muro

The right side of Sanchez, Emerson is a concern, even more so without Kulusevski available.

Lenglet feels important for playing out.

15:42 , Giuseppe Muro

For Newcastle, Joe Willock returns to the team and Joelinton starts despite a knee injury.

Bruno Guimaraes also starts, despite welcoming a new baby son in the past couple of days.

15:35 , Giuseppe Muro

So Antonio Conte has handed Oliver Skipp his first Premier League start since January.

The midfielder comes into the Spurs team as one of five changes from the team that lost 2-0 against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

There is no Cristian Romero or Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the Tottenham squad.

Emerson Royal, Davinson Sanchez, Clement Lenglet and Ryan Sessegnon also come in to the team.

Confirmed team news

Dejan Kulusevski will again be a big miss for Spurs today.

Antonio Conte says the Swede needs “a bit of time” to return to fitness after suffering a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury last week.

Kulusevski has not played since tweaking his hamstring on international duty last month but Conte hopes to have him available before the World Cup.

“His recovery was going well and then one day the situation worsened,” Conte said this week. “When this type of situation happens, you have to restart. You need time.

“We have the medical department to face injuries and they have to solve the situation in a short period because if they do, it means points in the table."

Stats

15:01 , Giuseppe Muro

Tottenham have won 10 consecutive home games in all competitions, scoring 27 goals during that run.

They are bidding to win their opening six home matches of a top-flight season for the first since 1964-65.

But Spurs face a tough test against a Newcastle side who have only lost once in 14 matches in all competitions (W7, D6).

Eddie Howe's side beat Fulham 4-1 on their last visit to London, have kept five top-flight clean sheets this season and have the division's best defensive record.

Head to head history and results

Tottenham wins: 73

Draws: 34

Newcastle wins: 59

Spurs have beaten Newcastle in seven of the past 10 Premier League meetings (D2, L1).

Conte calls on Spurs to show more cunning

14:38 , Giuseppe Muro

Antonio Conte has said his Tottenham side are still missing the experience and street-smarts to manage high-pressure matches, and reiterated that it will take time to turn the club into challengers.

Spurs went down 2-0 at Manchester United in a one-sided game on Wednesday, leaving a frustrated Conte claiming they always struggle in games when “the level is high”.

Speaking ahead of today’s game, the head coach insisted he was happy with the “commitment” of his players at Old Trafford but said they lack the game-management of many of their Premier League rivals.

“In the big games when the level is high, the pressure is high,” Conte said.

“To play at Old Trafford is not simple, not easy. A lot of noise, amazing atmosphere, the fans push a lot.

"For this reason, the step that we have to do [is] to try to cope also with this pressure.

“Experience is very important in these situations. Sometimes when you are suffering, you put the ball outside the stadium. So that you can breathe.

“Or if you have injury you stay [down]. I see many, many teams in England, who understand the moment when they are suffering. One player stops, wastes time. In this period, you breathe. Your mind becomes clear again. This is experience.

“The team that is used to winning, they have everything and experience is also important. You can’t buy experience. You can only improve by playing, playing, playing, facing situations and finding solutions.

“If you are suffering a lot you have to understand that maybe it is not the right moment to continue playing from the back. Go up, with a long ball, fight for the second ball.

“These are the types of situations where we can improve, and we are working on these aspects. To have experienced players in my opinion is very, very, very important.”

Prediction

14:31 , Giuseppe Muro

Spurs cannot afford another loss, particularly against a team who could feasibly fight them for a European spot this season. Newcastle, meanwhile, are lacking some key attacking players.

For that reason, a tight stalemate seems likely.

0-0 draw.

Newcastle team news

14:23 , Giuseppe Muro

Rumours have been circulating this morning that Newcastle could be without key man Bruno Guimaraes this afternoon following the birth of his son earlier this weekend.

Elsewhere, Eddie Howe has confirmed Joelinton is a major doubt after picking up a knock against Everton, while Jonjo Shelvey could feature for the first time this season.

Alexander Isak, Karl Darlow, Emil Krafth and Allan Saint-Maximin are all out.

Tottenham team news

14:16 , Giuseppe Muro

Spurs are still missing key forwards Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski.

Antonio Conte is expected to stick with the 3-5-2 system he used in Wednesday’s dismal 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford, with Lucas Moura still not considered fit enough to start and Bryan Gil not trusted in the Premier League.

There is likely to be a change at right wing-back, with Emerson Royal available again after suspension and likely to come straight back in for Matt Doherty. Ryan Sessegnon could also replace Ivan Perisic on the opposite flank.

The other probable change is at left centre-back, where Clement Lenglet is a straight swap for Ben Davies.

Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur, as well as the front two, could all do with a rest but it is doubtful if Conte will risk bringing in the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Japhet Tanganga or Oliver Skipp.
