Tottenham vs Marseille - LIVE!
Richarlison’s first goals for Tottenham saw them mark their Champions League return with a 2-0 win over 10-man Marseille. The summer signing scored two headers in the space of five second-half minutes to get Spurs out of trouble in their Group D opener.
Playing at the elite level for the first time since 2020, Antonio Conte’s men were labouring against the Ligue 1 side, who had Chancel Mbemba sent off early in the second half as he brought down Heung-min Son just outside the box when the last man.
But Richarlison, making his Champions League debut, opened his account for the club in the 76th minute from Ivan Perisic’s cross and then repeated the trick to kill the game from a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg delivery. His double ensured Spurs got their campaign off to a winning start in an otherwise largely difficult round of action for British teams. Liverpool and Chelsea were beaten on the road, while Celtic and Rangers also fell to opening defeats.

Match analysis
22:42 , Matt Verri
Few players can ever have established themselves as fan-favourites at Tottenham quite as quickly as Richarlison, whose popularity will continue to increase rapidly after he scored both goals in their 2-0 win over Marseille on Wednesday.
Spurs were making hard work of their return to the Champions League against the ten-man Ligue 1 side until the Brazilian’s brilliant pair of headers in the final 15 minutes.
The £60million summer signing from Everton will surely now keep his place for Saturday’s visit to champions Manchester City, despite Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski leading Spurs to a 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium in February.

Richarlison 9
Scored two brilliant headers to settle the game and ultimately make the difference. The Brazilian was his side’s best player in the first half too, linking midfield and attack well.
Spurs really needed that...

FT: Tottenham 2-0 Marseille
21:52 , Matt Verri
Well eventually it’s job done for Spurs.
They were poor for large periods but eventually quality up front proves the difference - story of their season so far really.
Up and running in the Champions League though!
21:49 , Matt Verri
90+1 mins: Four minutes added on in north London.
Spurs can enjoy every second of them, which wasn’t looking likely 20 minutes ago.
21:47 , Matt Verri
89 mins: Marseille have lost interest in trying to deal with Kulusevski’s fresh legs.
Kolasinac, who should be fresh himself, just hacks down the winger as he drifts inside. Not about to be tracking him, clearly.
Double change for Spurs

84 mins: Things far more comfortable for Spurs now, Marseille the ones in a rush to get the ball back in play.
Can’t see them getting back into this now though, especially a man down.
GOAL! Tottenham 2-0 Marseille | Richarlison 81'

RICHARLISON AT THE DOUBLE!
That should settle that. Brilliant from Richarlison, ball swung into the box again and he’s there once more to head home, this time off the inside of the post.
21:36 , Matt Verri
78 mins: Son is having a nightmare. Spurs on the break, they have the numbers and it’s a real chance to put this match to bed.
Takes an age on the ball, eventually plays it wide to Perisic but the chance has gone.
GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 Marseille | Richarlison 76'
21:34 , Matt Verri
AND THEY DO!
Spurs finally get something going! Perisic onto his right foot, clips a cross into the box and Richarlison powers a header past Lopez.
21:33 , Matt Verri
75 mins: Goalmouth scramble in the Tottenham box, Marseille not far away at all from turning it in! Spurs survive.
Such a disappointing start to their European campaign from Spurs so far - still time to rescue it.
Interesting changes...
21:31 , Matt Verri
#thfc Romero & Lenglet make way for Tanganga & Davies. Odd changes but a consequence of the mad schedule. Conte wants his defenders fresh for Haaland and Co. on Saturday.
— Dan Kilpatrick (@Dan_KP) September 7, 2022
21:30 , Matt Verri
72 mins: Hojbjerg with a hopeful ball into the box. Hopeless might have been a better word.
Perisic’s turn, much better delivery but Richarlison is unable to get on the end of it at the back post. Bentancur then concedes a very soft free-kick.
21:28 , Matt Verri
70 mins: Referee tells Clauss to go off on the far side of the pitch, the Marseille midfielder responds by jogging past him and strolling off on the other side. Yellow card, it’s safe to say.
Kolasinac is on for the visitors, continuing the Arsenal theme for them.
21:25 , Matt Verri
68 mins: Spurs much better since Kulusevski came on. Son, meanwhile, is having another night to forget. Gives the ball away under no pressure at all.
Hosts wins it back, Kulusevski onto his left foot and swings another cross into the box. Over everyone and out of play.
21:23 , Matt Verri
65 mins: That’s superb from Kulusevski, immediately had an impact. Runs at Tavares, skips past him and gets to the byline. Keeps driving at goal, eventually his ball across goal is blocked behind for a corner.
Taken short, Kulusevski fires it in and it’s headed away. That’s another corner... or not. Goal kick given which is a shambles of a decision.
Son booked for complaining about it.
21:20 , Matt Verri
62 mins: Bit of excitement as Romero pings a brilliant ball over the top and Perisic is in all sorts of space.
Can’t bring it down though, eventually lobs it across the face of goal and Richarlison’s header is over the bar. Lopez taking an absolute age over goal-kicks, as you’d expect.
21:18 , Matt Verri
60 mins: Kane lays it off to Emerson, he dinks a cross into the box and the referee blows his whistle as Hojbjerg throws himself at it.
Conte has seen enough. Emerson off, Kulusevski on.
21:16 , Matt Verri
57 mins: Beyond a shot dragged wide from Son, there’s been very little from Spurs with the extra man.
Frustrations grow when Bailly throws himself to the floor and somehow gets the decision - Kane looks completely bemused.
Dan Kilpatrick at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
21:14 , Matt Verri
There’s onus on Spurs to take the initiative from here but they have continued to look sloppy since the red card. Dejan Kulusevski or Ryan Sessegnon may make a positive difference.
21:11 , Matt Verri
53 mins: Dier shown a yellow card, refereeing indicating that was his third foul.
Free-kick swung into the box, Bailly flicks it on but nobody following in behind him.
21:09 , Matt Verri
51 mins: Balerdi on to replace Gerson, who is sacrificed.
Hojbjerg tries his luck from about 35 yards out, blocked by Richarlison in the end. Not sure Spurs need to be getting desperate like that, with 40 minutes to go and a man advantage.
21:07 , Matt Verri
49 mins: Bailly booked too for his complaints.
Kane lining this free-kick up, really fancies it. Not sure why, he’s smashed it halfway up the wall. That wasn’t the plan.
RED CARD! Chancel Mbemba 47'
21:05 , Matt Verri
What a start to the half for Spurs!
Son played through and he’s in behind the Marseille defence. Brought down on the edge of the box by Mbemba who throws himself into the challenge as the last man.
Can’t moan about that.

Conte will surely be frustrated at how loose his side have been in possession. Even their seasoned players at this level, Perisic and Bentancur, have misplaced simple passes.
HT: Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
20:47 , Matt Verri
Marseille finish the half strongly, Guendouzi has an effort from distance saved.
Spurs fans not happy as the half-time whistle goes, that was a really poor display from the hosts.
20:46 , Matt Verri
45 mins: One minute added on.
It’s for the best, this has not been great. No need to prolong the pain.
20:44 , Matt Verri
43 mins: Lovely pass over the top from Gerson, Tavares looks to be in behind but Emerson slides in and does just about enough to put the wing-back off.
Conte then goes absolutely mental at Richarlison for losing the ball again - been a half full of frustration for the Italian.
20:42 , Matt Verri
41 mins: Tottenham’s best moment of the match!
Son can drive at the Marseille defence, feeds it through to Kane. Shifted onto his right foot, drags an effort wide of the far post.
Decent chance that for Kane, and it’s woken the home fans up.
20:40 , Matt Verri
39 mins: Big chance for Marseille to break as Guendouzi clips a ball over the top and Tavares is away.
Plays the ball infield, Perisic has read it really well though and tracked back to clear.
20:38 , Matt Verri
37 mins: Spurs win a free-kick out on the right wing, Marseille have dropped really deep in their own box to defend this.
Son swings it in, not the best delivery and comfortably headed away.
20:36 , Matt Verri
35 mins: That’s pretty poor from Kane, even if you can understand it.
Worked out to him on the right, he’s got so much space as he drives into the box. Opts not to pick out one of his team-mates, cut inside onto his left foot instead and goes for goal. Tavares blocks.
Not sure that was the best option.

Some groans of frustration creeping in around the stadium as Marseille continue to dictate the tempo of this game.
Spurs are struggling to get out against the French side’s press and OM are starting to grow in confidence and try their luck from range.
20:33 , Matt Verri
32 mins: Guendouzi goes for goal from range, well struck but it’s blocked.
Loops up into the air, Lloris under no pressure at all opts to punch it straight up in the air for a reason only he knows. Home fans not impressed.
20:31 , Matt Verri
31 mins: Marseille win a corner, much to the delight of their fans in the away end. And Joey Barton.
Swung in deep by Veretout, Mbemba jumps for it at the back post but it’s over his head.
20:30 , Matt Verri
29 mins: Spurs continue to give the ball away cheaply, yet to click into gear.
Marseille break up the pitch, Gerson goes down on the edge of the box and waits for a whistle that doesn’t come.
20:27 , Matt Verri
26 mins: Something at last from Tottenham going forward.
Lots of space for them, as it’s played in behind for Emerson. Goes for goal, drags it badly. So much so that Perisic can keep it in play, he stands up a cross to the back post where Lopez claims.
Got a bit of a hand in the eye from Kane, he’ll need some treatment.
20:25 , Matt Verri
24 mins: Soft free-kick conceded by Spurs, up come the Marseille defenders.
Visitors take it short and try and play it out wide instead, where they send it straight out of play. What a mess.
20:23 , Matt Verri
22 mins: Spurs have not got going at all. Kane hasn’t seen the ball much, Son and Richarlison barely at all.
Moments will surely come for them on the counter but nothing yet, Marseille much the better side.
20:21 , Matt Verri
19 mins: Ball lifted over the top for Suarez and he has space to run into.
Romero behind him, Dier in front and he gets crowded out. Wins a throw-in high up the pitch for his side though.
Tavares cuts inside onto his right foot, drills a low effort at goal but it’s dragged wide.
20:18 , Matt Verri
17 mins: Bentancur fires a pass out wide looking for Perisic, well behind him though and it’s out of play.
Not the most thrilling of 17 minutes. Neither side has created anything even resembling a chance.
20:16 , Matt Verri
15 mins: Tottenham corner, their first of the match. Son strolls over to take it. Drilled into the low post, headed away by Guendouzi.
Meanwhile in the away end, Joey Barton is there with the Marseille ultras. Obviously.
Dan Kilpatrick at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
20:14 , Matt Verri
No chances for either side in an even opening 12 minutes, notably for a couple of sublime touches by Harry Kane, who has clearly enjoying his return to this stage after two-and-a-half years.
20:14 , Matt Verri
12 mins: Real waste from Marseille, who are seeing plenty of the ball without doing anything with it.
Mbemba in space on the right, four players to pick out on the box and he swings a cross over every single one of them.
20:11 , Matt Verri
10 mins: Suarez with a smart turn, Dier with a silly challenge and clatters him from behind. Doesn’t bother to moan too much about that.
Guendouzi does what he does best, quickly arriving on the scene to complain to the referee.
20:07 , Matt Verri
7 mins: Marseille win the ball back and break with numbers, Clauss tries his luck from distance but it’s blocked.
Visitors are pushing high up the pitch, leaving a lot of space behind for Son and Kane. Bold.
20:06 , Matt Verri
5 mins: Former Arsenal midfielder Guendouzi about as popular as you’d expect him to be in Tottenham territory. Not very. Loudly booed on every occassion he touches the ball.
Low-key start overall, neither side offering much as of yet.
20:04 , Matt Verri
3 mins: Marseille seeing a fair amount of the ball in the early stages, Tottenham happy to sit off in their shape.
Guendouzi looks to find Suarez in behind, too much on the pass though and it rolls straight out of play.

Conte explains team selection
19:46 , Matt Verri
“When you have so many games in a row, you have to understand which is the best solution.
“We had a really good performance again Fulham and I prefer to only make one change.
“Richarlison with Son and Kane played very well, we know we have four strong players for three positions. For this reason, we need rotation in the best possible way.”

Conte furious with schedule
19:36 , Matt Verri
Antonio Conte says Tottenham have been “penalised” by an “incredible and crazy” fixture list and urged the club to lobby the Premier League for a kinder schedule in future.
Spurs are in the midst of a run of seven games in 21 days, and face an away league game at Manchester City on Saturday, tonight’s clash against Marseille and the visit to Sporting Lisbon next Tuesday.
“Honestly to see this schedule [for] Tottenham is incredible, it’s crazy because we played three games in six days against Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Fulham,” Conte said. “Now we are playing after four days but we are starting to play again three games, three important games against Marseille in Champions League, City away and Sporting Lisbon away in six days.
“I think maybe this is my first time in my career to see a schedule like this.”

Work for Conte to do
19:23 , Matt Verri
As Tottenham make a return to the Champions League tomorrow, Antonio Conte’s record in the competition remains the only blot on his excellent CV.
Conte won five league titles in six seasons as a manager before joining Spurs, but his form in Europe’s top club competition is dismal by contrast and the one thing that still sets him apart from rivals Thomas Tuchel, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, who have all coached European Cup-winning teams.
Ahead of Marseille’s visit to London, Conte’s Champions League record stands at 12 wins, 11 draws, 11 defeats and an average points-per-game of 1.38 — way short of his 2.19 average domestically.
In five Champions League campaigns with Juventus (two), Chelsea (one) and Inter Milan (two), Conte’s solitary quarter-final appearance came in his first season in the competition with the Old Lady of Turin, while his only knockout win was against Celtic. His Inter side crashed out at the group stages in consecutive seasons.

Arsenal cast-offs out to foil Spurs
18:42 , Matt Verri
European nights at Tottenham are generally special, and their return to the Champions League tonight should have the added feel of a local derby, writes Dan Kilpatrick.
Spurs’ first opponents in the competition since March 2020 are French side Marseille, whose squad is packed with players associated with the red half of north London.
Alexis Sanchez, Marseille’s most celebrated former Arsenal player, is suspended tonight, but among the antagonists Spurs fans will have to remember to boo are Nuno Tavares, Matteo Guendouzi and Sead Kolasinac, as well as former West Ham forward Dimitri Payet.
Igor Tudor’s cast of Premier League misfits also includes on loan Manchester United defender Eric Bailly and Jordan Veretout and Chancel Mbemba, formerly of Aston Villa and Newcastle, respectively.

Paratici hails Richarlison deal
18:27 , Matt Verri
Tottenham managing director Fabio Paratici has said breaking the club‘s transfer record to sign Richarlison over the summer was an easy decision.
The Brazilian joined from Everton in a deal which could be worth up to £60million and has made an immediate impression at the start of this season.
Richarlison shone on his full debut in Saturday’s win over Fulham and is already pushing for a place in a front three which has comfortably been the best in the Premier League since Dejan Kulusevski joined Harry Kane and Heung-min Son from February.
“We are so convinced [it was right] to buy him so far,” Paratici said. “This kind of style of football is, I think, perfect for us. Not just technically speaking but [in terms of] character.

Prediction
18:13 , Matt Verri
This is not the relatively easy game some fans may have anticipated when the group stage draw was made.Spurs are unbeaten so far this season, but so are Marseille. Injuries could play into the hosts’ hands, but their French opponents have only conceded three times in six games and scored 13.
Marseille will be equally wary in what is their toughest game of the group. A win for either team could prove invaluable come their second meeting in November.
Spurs to win, 3-2.
Marseille team news
18:03 , Matt Verri
There will be plenty of familiar faces in the Marseille squad, including former Arsenal duo Matteo Guendouzi and Sead Kolasinac, and Gunners loanee Nuno Tavares.
Former West Ham star Dimitri Payet is likely to miss out with a calf injury, while Alexis Sanchez is suspended.
Tottenham team news
17:52 , Matt Verri
Antonio Conte made five changes for the win over Fulham, which was by a narrow scoreline which did not reflect his side’s dominance. Richarlison came in for his first start and impressed so could keep his place, though Dejan Kulusevski will have other ideas. Heung-min Son has struggled this season but is unlikely to be dropped.
Cristian Romero returned from injury and will start again, with Ben Davies and Eric Dier likely on either side despite loanee Clement Lenglet’s impressive first start. Ivan Perisic will return at wing-back.
Conte has been reluctant to play Matt Doherty so far this season but he could surely now deputise for Emerson Royal, who is due a rest before the Premier League showdown with Manchester City this weekend.
Tottenham predicted XI (3-4-3): Lloris; Romero, Dier, Davies; Doherty, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Perisic; Kulusevski, Richarlison, Kane.
