Tottenham Hotspur have signed England youth international Ella Morris from Southampton on a three-year deal. Head coach Robert Vilahamn has a long-term plan in place for the Lilywhites, aiming to develop his squad by bringing in talented youth players.

For the Saints, Morris played a pivotal role, especially being part of their promotion to the Barclays Women’s Championship. In fact, her impressive form at club level gave her the opportunity to perform on the international stage. So, what will the 21-year-old bring to Vilahamn’s Spurs side? Is she a perfect fit for their long-term plan?

From Southampton academy to the Championship

Since turning 14, Morris has progressed to the top tier of English football with the Southampton FC academy. Her potential to be a strong attacking defender was noticed at a young age, which gave her the opportunity to follow the route of a professional footballer.

During the 2018/19 season, she earned her debut for the first team. The following season she was a fully-fledged first team member of the squad. During this campaign, the Saints played in the Women’s National League Division One South West. Morris had an immediate impact on the team, bringing her youthful energy and passion. In fact, she was voted as Southampton Women’s Player of the Season by the fans, alongside Players’ Player of the Season. At such a young age, this was a dream debut season for her first club filled with celebrated achievements.

Southampton won promotion to the Barclays Women’s Championship at the end of the 2021/22 campaign and Morris made more than 20 appearances for the club that season. However, her record improved the following season in the next tier of women’s football. More accolades were presented to her name, and her confidence to attack from the back, as well as remain a solid defender, only grew.

Now, over half a decade later, Morris is opening the door on her next chapter with Spurs. She will be remembered for her 117 appearances, and 14 goals for the Saints. There is no doubt that she was one of their most driven and adept youth players yet.

International career

On an international level, Morris made her England debut in the U17s category. Showing great promise as part of the Saints academy group, she made 19 appearances as an U17 Lioness. Being an attacking right-back, she not only secured clean sheets for her nation, but also created goalscoring opportunities.

At present, the young talent is a frequent member of the England U23 squad due to her consistency in the Saints back line. Her first call-up at this level was in February 2023, and since she has scored her first ever youth international goal. A volley against Belgium saw the U23s take a 3-0 lead and marked this memorable occasion. Her England career is only beginning at this age.

The future for Ella Morris

Spurs experienced a breakthrough season in the previous Barclays Women’s Super League campaign. By finishing in the top half of the table and reaching the Adobe Women’s FA Cup Final for the first time in club history, Robert Vilahamn proved himself a worthy manager of the North London side. However, his ambitions are much higher.

With Morris making the trip to London, she is looking forward to starting her new chapter. In her words: “I’m a WSL player now with Spurs. A massive club, and I’m really excited to get going.”

To join a club with great potential during their period of transition and development should provide the England youngster to showcase her talent and earn a permanent spot in the match-day squad. She will definitely be a young player to watch in the 2024/25 WSL season.

On the international stage, the defender also has the potential to develop greatly. There is certainly an opportunity for Morris to become a senior Lioness one day. If she performs at the same, if not an even better level, at Tottenham Hotspur there is no doubt she will capture Sarina Wiegman’s attention. Her England future is undoubtedly a promising one, that has only just begun.
