Tottenham Hotspur have officially exercised their option to extend Heung-min Son’s contract, keeping him at the club until 2026.

This move ensures the captain remains in London for at least one more season beyond this season, avoiding the risk of losing him on a free transfer in the summer.

Son’s contributions to Spurs since his 2015 arrival from Bayer Leverkusen have been monumental.

With 431 appearances to his name – the 11th most in club history – and 169 goals, he ranks as their fourth-highest scorer of all time.

Tottenham’s statement called him a ‘modern-day great’ and highlighted his global stature and enduring influence at the club.

They noted iconic moments such as his 2019 solo strike against Burnley, which earned him the FIFA Puskas Award, and his record-breaking 2021-22 campaign when he shared the Premier League Golden Boot with 23 goals.

This extension underscores Son’s value, not just for his on-pitch abilities but also as a leader. Named club captain in August 2023, he remains a pivotal figure in Tottenham’s dressing room.

However, this season has not been his sharpest. With just five league goals, he has struggled to hit the heights of his previous campaigns, whether deployed on the left wing or in a central role.

Tottenham’s decision to extend his contract is as much about securing their future as it is about recognising his contributions over the past decade.

Having already broken the club’s Premier League assist record and climbed into the league’s top 20 scorers of all time, Son’s legacy at Tottenham is firmly established.

Looking ahead, there is speculation about whether the club will negotiate a longer-term deal to keep their talisman beyond 2026.

For now, the extension ensures that Son will remain part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans as the team looks to challenge for honours in the coming seasons.

In a footballing world where loyalty is increasingly rare, Son continues to be a symbol of consistency and commitment for Tottenham, further cementing his place in the club’s modern history.
