Tottenham must follow up interest in 27y/o ‘top’ defender with a transfer swoop – View
Tottenham Hotspur are in dire need of defensive reinforcement. Spurs have been plagued with a staggering number of injuries, and it is affecting performances.
The Lilywhites have not won any of their last seven Premier League games and sit in 15th position when many expected Tottenham to be competing at the top end of the table.
First-choice centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven have been sidelined for much of the season, leaving Spurs looking brittle and exposed.
Spurs need to enter the market for defensive reinforcement, and they have been credited with fleeting interest in Feyenoord centre-back David Hancko, who has been one of the better defenders in the Eredivisie for years.
He came to global attention with imperious performances for Slovakia at the 2024 European Championship. Spurs must firm their interest with a concrete offer to price the 27-year-old away from Rotterdam.
Hancko has been solid in the UEFA Champions League, winning 63% of his aerial and 67% of his ground duels, helping to keep one clean sheet in seven appearances. He also scored a massive goal against Manchester City as they came from three goals down to draw 3-3.
In the Eredivisie, Hancko has been just as dominant, winning 65% of his duels. He has helped his side keep three clean sheets in 18 outings while bagging two goals and creating three big chances. He has a knack for finding optimal goalscoring positions.
Besides, he is also a leader and can deputise as a left-back for the oft-injured Destiny Udogie. Signing Hancko is a no-brainer.
Tottenham cannot afford to delay addressing their defensive woes any longer. David Hancko offers the perfect blend of experience, versatility, and leadership that Spurs desperately need to stabilise their backline.
His consistent performances in both domestic and European competitions demonstrate that he is capable of stepping up to the challenges of the Premier League.
Ex-Feyenoord defender Tim de Cler was full of praise for Hancko when speaking to Dutch outlet SoccerNews. “He is so stable and can basically do anything. I just think he is a top defender all-round,” he said.
“I think he could easily handle a club just below Europe’s top six. I’m talking about a club like Atletico Madrid or Liverpool. He’s definitely up to that level.”
Signing Hancko isn’t just a smart move for Spurs – it’s necessary.
