Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly entered the race for Ajax striker Brian Brobbey as the top brass look to reinforce the squad for the second half of the season.

Fabrizio Romano mentioned yesterday that Spurs made enquiries into his availability. Over the night, major news from the Netherlands broke out that the Dutch centre-forward was already in London as Tottenham and West Ham United mull over a move.

Brobbey is a physical striker trained under the Dutch total football system. He has all the attributes of a top centre-forward, except for that one quality that distinguishes the best from the rest – being able to stick the ball into the back of the net.

Since stepping into senior football, Brobbey has been tipped for great things, but his wastefulness in front of goal limits his game.

This season, the Dutch international has netted a measly three goals across all competitions, missing 19 (!) big chances. In the league, he has scored once and missed 11 big chances. How the top brass figured this is the man to bolster the Spurs ranks is beyond mind-boggling.

Proponents may point to his performances last term, where he recorded 22 goals and 12 assists in 42 appearances. It is worth noting that he scored 18 goals in the league and missed a staggering 25 big chances.

The season before, it was the same tale. Brobbey scores many goals but registers an alarming number of misses, frustrating the Amsterdammers with his profligacy. He is not scoring this term. All they are left with is wastefulness.

Tottenham must avoid such an uninspiring signing. He brings a similar skillset to the oft-injured Dominic Solanke, but he does not move the needle at a time when Spurs need ceiling raisers to stem their egregious run of form.

Spurs are winless in six Premier League games. They have only won one of their past ten league fixtures, an abysmal run that would get most coaches not named Ange Postecoglou fired.

To turn the tide, he needs better players than Brobbey. Even though the club needs a back-up striker, they can aim higher than the frustrating 22-year-old. Timo Werner is already on the books. There is no need to add to the club’s finishing woes.
