Tottenham: Cristian Romero fears lengthy absence with new injury

Cristian Romero fears he has been ruled out until the end of January after picking up a new injury in a big blow for Tottenham.

The centre-back returned against Chelsea after almost a month out with a bruised toe, but lasted less than 15 minutes as Spurs went on to lose 4-3 despite scoring two early goals.

Speaking after the game, manager Ange Postecoglou said: "Romero is just obviously hugely disappointing. He felt something in his quad.

"He trained really well. He wasn't the one I was worried about, to be honest, but, you know, it's just like I said, the way the season's going for us."

Romero was due to undergo scans on Monday and Argentine journalist Gaston Edul reported overnight on X that the defender is expected to be ruled out for six weeks with a muscular problem.

Edul confirmed Romero has suffered a new injury rather than aggravated his previous foot injury.

Should Romero be sidelined for six weeks, he would miss the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United, and visit of Liverpool in the Premier League three days later and the trip to Arsenal in the north London derby on January 15, 2025.

The timeline would see him return for the league visit of Leicester on January 26 or Tottenham's final league phase game in the Europa League, which is at home to Elsfsborg.
