Torquay United say they are investigating an allegation of homophobic abuse directed at the referee in Saturday's 1-0 loss to Hampton and Richmond.

It is alleged a Torquay fan made the comments at the end of the the National League South match, which saw the Gulls lose at home for the first time this campaign.

Torquay say any person found to have committed such an offence will face a lifetime ban from Plainmoor.

"There is no place for homophobia at Torquay United - football is for everyone, and Plainmoor is for everyone," chief executive Joe Lovell said.

"At a time when we are seeing the largest crowds in more than 50 years and welcoming new fans and families to Plainmoor to enjoy watching Torquay United, this type of behaviour goes against everything we are trying to achieve here at your club and will undermine our progress.

"Abuse and discriminatory behaviour is totally unacceptable and directly against our values as a club and a community."
