The 30-year-old missed most of the first two months of the season after suffering a jaw injury in training camp that required surgery.
Mermis will assume a leadership role on the Marlies blueline and will provide a nice all-around boost for the club, he has 140 points in 434 career AHL games.
After playing 47 games for the Minnesota Wild last season Mermis also serves as an experienced depth defender if the Maple Leafs run into injuries.
