Top Five at 15: The Canucks’ Top Five Performers In The First Half Of January 2025

Welcome back to another instalment of Top Five at 15/30. Last time, we looked at the Vancouver Canucks’ top performers from December 15 to 30. This time, we’ll be looking at the best performances from players throughout the second half of December. Here are the top five Canucks for December 31 to January 15.

Conor Garland

Most notable game: January 2 vs. Seattle Kraken

Points since the 30th: 2G, 0A in 8GP

Conor Garland started the new year with a doozy of a goal against the Kraken, springing on the chance after a Seattle turnover. His other goal of the past couple weeks was scored in the team’s Wednesday night matchup against the Washington Capitals, with the opportunity coming off a rebound thrown on net by Canucks captain Quinn Hughes. Garland is currently the team leader in points by forwards with 11 goals and 19 assists in 42 games. In the past eight games, he has played the third-most minutes among all skaters, and first among forwards, with 146:58.

Tyler Myers

Most notable game: January 2 vs. Seattle Kraken

Points since the 30th: 1G, 3A in 8GP

With Hughes out due to injury, it was Tyler Myers’ turn to take a spin at being the team’s number one defenceman. In the past eight games, Myers has played the most minutes of any player on the ice with 183:27. In all strengths, he is first on the team in corsi-for with 176, scoring chances for with 77, and high-danger chances for with 33, while being second in expected goals-for with 7.96. In Vancouver’s match against the Kraken on January 2, he recorded a season-high of five shots.

J.T. Miller

Most notable game: January 6 vs. Montréal Canadiens

Points since the 30th: 2G, 4A in 8GP

J.T. Miller was the Canucks’ highest points getter since December 31, collecting two goals and four assists. Since then, he had also led the team in faceoffs and faceoff wins with 150 and 77 respectively, taking 49 more than the next player. He has the highest corsi-for of all forwards with 153, and leads the team in shots with 22 in this span of time. In the team’s game against Montréal, he potted two goals and two assists while recording three shots and six hits.

Quinn Hughes

Most notable game: January 11 vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

Points since the 30th: 1G, 4A in 5GP

To start the past two weeks, I’d initially thought Hughes wouldn’t make it on this list due to being out with injury. Then, I remembered who I was talking about. The Canucks captain can score a goal without putting a single shot on net — it shouldn’t surprise anyone that he’s one of the top five players of the past two weeks. In this span of time, he’s still second on the team in points accumulated despite playing three games less than everyone else. Not to mention, he’s also playing with a taped-up hand. Even with the missed time, he’s still first on the team in corsi-for with 60.64%, expected goals for percentage with 62.06%, and shots-for percentage with 63.54%.

Kevin Lankinen

Most notable game: January 2 vs. Seattle Kraken

Record since the 30th: 2–3–2

Kevin Lankinen should have made his appearance in this column a lot sooner than now. However, similar to Hughes popping up every week, this wouldn’t have allowed for much diversity in the lists. Lankinen started 2025 off by filling in for Thatcher Demko after the latter left a game due to back spasms. This match eventually went to the shootout, with Lankinen stopping every attempt. Notably, he came into this game without facing any warm up shots, but was still able to steal a win for his team. He then proceeded to play every game until January 10, when Demko came back to start the first of a back-to-back. Against the Leafs on Saturday, Lankinen recorded his fourth shutout of the season and the first in franchise history in Toronto.
