British gold medalist spotted knitting up a storm at Olympic diving event

Tom Daley is a man of many talents.

Most people know him as an Olympic diver — twisting, tucking and somersaulting through the air and into the water, making the smallest splash humanly possible off a 10-metre platform.

But most recently, he’s making headlines thanks to his threading, stitching and weaving, as Daley was hilariously spotted knitting while watching the women’s 3-metre diving final.

Turns out, Daley began learning his new craft at the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown and even started an Instagram page last September dedicated to the cozy clothing and accessories he creates. The account now has 430,000 followers.

"The one thing that has kept me sane throughout this whole process is my love for knitting, crocheting and all things stitching," said Daley in an Instagram video.

Now he’s found a way to combine those two skills.

Daley won gold in the Tokyo 2020 men’s synchronized 10-metre diving event alongside partner Matty Lee last week, ending China’s gold-medal reign in the event since 2000, and marking a dream come true for the 27-year-old who won bronze at both London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Daley and Lee’s final total score of 471.81 points just edged out China's Cao Yuan and Chen Aisen’s 470.58.

Of course, Daley had to find a safe place to store his gold medal made of recycled electronics, and where better than in one of his homey creations?

The morning after winning gold, Daley made a pouch that perfectly fits a medal with the Union Jack knit on one side and the rising sun knit onto the other to commemorate his achievement as a Great Britain gold medallist in Japan.

"It all tucks in nicely with a little pouch for me to carry around my little medal to stop it getting scratched," said Daley.
