TNS beat Llangollen Town 16-0 to equal Welsh record

The New Saints equalled the record for the biggest win in the history of the Welsh Cup by beating Llangollen Town 16-0.

The scoreline matched the previous 16-goal record, first set in 1883-34 when Davenham beat Holywell Reserves by the same margin.

Cardiff City also beat Knighton 16-0 in 1961 while, most recently, Bala Town beat Brymbo 17-1 in September 2021.

TNS, runners up last year, trounced the third-tier Ardal North East side at Park Hall to progress to the third round.

Craig Harrison’s side – whose next fixture is against Kazakhstan’s Astana in the Europa Conference League on Thursday – were 9-0 up at half-time, with Adam Wilson scoring a hat-trick before the break.

On-loan Bradford forward Wilson added to his tally after the interval for a total of four with Ryan Brobbel, Declan McManus, Danny Redmond and Ash Baker all scoring two each.

TNS’ defeat by Connah’s Quay Nomads in last year’s final was their first defeat in the competition in six years having won the previous three finals.

The Oswestry-based club are aiming to capture the trophy for a 10th occasion to equal the record of Swansea City.

The Welsh Cup is the third oldest football competition in the world having been first contested in 1877.
