‘It’s Go Time’: The story behind USC coach Mike Furrey’s daily social media posts

Nearly every morning since May 1, 2022, Mike Furrey has posted the same message to his X (formerly known as Twitter) account:

“It’s Go Time - This is the day the Lord has Made - Do something with it! Don’t complain about the past - jump out of (bed emoji) & LIVE Be grateful for what God has given You & Move Joshua 1:9 #LEVEL #LOCKEDIN #DORIGHT #110.”

Alarm clocks usher in Furrey’s call to action, which is sprinkled with exclamation point and toolbox emojis. The statement has since evolved to include more frequent use of emoticons, replaced “Don’t complain about the past” with “Live by Faith - Not by Fear,” and added a South Carolina football shoutout: “Great Day to be a GAMECOCK!! LETS GO!!” Holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and Mother’s Day warrant special themed alterations.

(Furrey’s first USC-centric post came Feb. 29 the day of his hiring. He skipped Feb. 28, but posted “Great day to be a SAINT” Feb. 27, a nod to Division II Limestone University, where Furrey served as head coach from 2022-24 and 2016-17.)

Furrey has taken on this task for the last two years. He shuns the copy and paste function, opting to type the post out every morning. No daily reminder necessary (which could be why he occasionally misses days, but hey, he’s human).

It’s about discipline for the wide receivers coach.

“It’s a reminder to me,” Furrey told The State. “... There’s no reason for us to not be so thankful to just get out of bed and live. Jump out of the bed and live.”

Waking up in the morning is a universal experience. Sometimes one gets up, wipes the sleep from their eyes and feels excited for the day ahead. Sometimes the lousy vibes of yesterday bleed into the next morning. Furrey’s message intends to set a positive tone.

Every once in a while, Furrey gets a direct message from someone touched by his daily affirmations:

“You’ve changed my life,” they tell him.

“Your message in the morning makes an impact.”

Furrey knows, as a football coach, he has the power to impact other people. Whether those are his players or the fans who care to keep up with him on social media. That power is not something he takes lightly.

”That’s why I do it,” he said of his posts. “And that’s why I do it every morning.”
