Time for Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to make the bold move. And make this one hire | Opinion
It’s time for the Dallas Cowboys to make the bold move.
With a 3-5 record, their $240 million quarterback hurting and their defensive star continuing to ail on the sidelines, it’s time to change the 2024 season mantra from ‘All-in” to “All-out.”
And that includes making a major change.
While owner/general manager/chief spokesperson Jerry Jones insisted a few weeks ago that he would not fire head coach Mike McCarthy in the middle of the season, it’s time to change course and do just that.
Oh, it’s not McCarthy’s fault this season has become a disaster.
McCarthy is a good human being. He’s a good NFL coach. He’s just not the right guy at the right time for the Cowboys franchise right now. Jones said months ago that McCarthy’s future with the franchise depended greatly on a deep Cowboys playoff run.
That isn’t happening. Not with this roster that Jerry gave to Mike. Not with your quarterback muttering that his team sucks and possibly headed to injured reserve.
Not with so many defensive starters, including Micah Parsons, missing so many games.
Not with the absence of a running game.
Thus, it’s time to free McCarthy and bring in the one guy who can examine the franchise’s personnel ills and possibly fix it.
Yes, that’s the bold move that Jones needs to make. And make it now to give BillyB the rest of the season to evaluate the roster and decide what moves need to be made in the coming offseason. Let him judge if it makes sense to trade Micah Parsons for a boatload of draft picks, let him decide who the Cowboys should draft with a likely top-10 pick.
If Jerry Jones wants to see the franchise become a Super Bowl contender in his lifetime, then the 82-year old needs to give up the personnel reigns and give them to BillyB. Sure, it’s a gamble. BillyB is only 10 years younger than Jones. And his downfall in New England is certainly worth noting.
Does Trevon Diggs confront a reporter if BillyB is the coach? I don’t think so.
Does the $240 million quarterback rip the franchise on the sidelines if BillyB is the coach? I don’t think so.
BillyB would instantly bring a different environment to Frisco and the Star. Certainly there will be ego clashes behind closed doors when arguing over personnel decisions.
Jerry, don’t waste the next 24 hours making minute changes prior to Tuesday’s trade deadline. Make the bold move for the future of the franchise.
The time is now, Jerry.
Make this one bold move. For the fans. For the franchise. For yourself.
