Tiger Woods has his work cut out for him after Round 1 of the 2024 U.S. Open.

Playing in the major for the first time since 2020, the 15-time major winner finished the day with a 4-over-74 and is tied for 128th as of the time of writing on Thursday afternoon. He'll need a much stronger Round 2 on Friday if he hopes to make the cut at the U.S. Open for the first time since 2019.

Woods began his day strong with a birdie on the 10th hole – the first hole for he and his group played Thursday – and a couple of other near-miss putts on birdie tries on the back nine. He ended up saving par on those near misses and was at one stroke under par through six holes.

The wheels fells off after that. Woods hit several three-putt bogeys on the next seven holes as his score ballooned to 4-over-par. When he did finally sink a birdie on the fifth hole, a bogey three holes later negated the positive progress. Woods ended the day with a par on the ninth hole to finish at his 4-over-74 score.
