Showers and thunderstorms will make their way into portions of Northern California beginning this weekend, with heavy rain, gusty winds and lighting in the forecast.

Meteorologist Katrina Hand with the National Weather Service said the highest chance for thunderstorm development will be in the foothills and the Sierra Nevada, as well as the southern Cascades and coastal range.

Thunderstorms were forecast to start in some areas by noon Saturday and stretch into Monday night.

If you see lighting, shelter indoors or inside a closed car, the National Weather Service cautioned on its Twitter page. Avoid water, trees or other tall objects like the top of a hill, open fields and picnic tables.

Weather in the Sacramento Valley

Cities including Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto and Vacaville won’t receive the brunt of the storm.

But that doesn’t mean there will be clear skies.

Hand said showers and thunderstorms could drift into lower elevations, including portions of the Sacramento Valley, giving it a “nonzero chance” of wet, gloomy weather reaching Sacramento County.

As of Saturday afternoon, there was a 20% chance of showers on Sunday night in Sacramento, with winds between 10 mph and 13 mph and gusts as high as 20 mph. There’s another chance it could rain on Monday before 11 a.m., with winds up to 10 mph.

Weather farther south in the Modesto area is forecast to be similar, with a 20% chance of showers before 11 p.m., along with winds up to 11 mph.
