Thomas Brown reveals how he would've handled Tyrique Stevenson
In what was beyond a disappointing season for the Chicago Bears in 2024, no worse moment for than their loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 8.
The final moments of the loss to the Commanders came with many talking points, mainly the game-winning Hail Mary for Washington that was highlighted by Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson taunting the crowd right before the play, then tipping the ball to Commanders wide receiver Noah Brown for the game-winner.
The loss to the Commanders was one of the final games in the tenure of former head coach Matt Eberflus, who showed little to no emotion on the incident with Stevenson. Although he was benched to begin the game the following week against the Arizona Cardinals, there never seemed to be a sincere and realistic coach reaction to the incident, which would then be followed by a 10-game losing streak and Eberflus' firing.
Interim head coach Thomas Brown was asked how he would have handled the Stevenson incident, and he made it a point to say that he and Stevenson did have several meetings but did not reveal details. Feeling that the confrontation is necessary, Brown, who was described as much more intense than Eberflus, believed that approaching players on certain incidents is important.
"Confrontation is necessary," Brown said in his final press conference. "Tyrique and I have had several 1-on-1s since. I think it's important to get the message across for certain players on certain issues." Brown declined to go into details about those conversations.
Stevenson is a very talented cornerback, but he's also one that has a reputation for playing with his emotions, even in a positive manner. It'll be interesting to see how the next coaching staff approaches their work with Stevenson, who is a vital and key piece to not only the Bears secondary, but the young pool of talent they are building, as well.
