Thomas Brown has high praise for Bears rookie Rome Odunze
Chicago Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze might not be having the rookie season that many were wanting or expecting, including himself, but Odunze is still receiving plenty of praise.
In last week's loss to the Detroit Lions, a handoff to Odunze from his fellow rookie, quarterback Caleb Williams, was fumbled and then on the following possession, Odunze would fumble following a 19-yard catch and run. But Odunze did bounce back with a solid second half, where he finished with four catches for 77 yards.
The two fumbles happening on plays involving him did not help the morale for Odunze and Williams, two of the young bright spots in the future of the Bears franchise. But interim head coach Thomas Brown sees plenty of talent and potential with Odunze.
"I think he's been good. I think obviously he's continued to emerge here recently," Brown said. "Rome's been consistent since Day 1, the ball hasn't always found him throughout the year as far as his role, and the plays are from a progression standpoint. But when he's had opportunities to make plays, the guy constantly shows up. You talk about critical moments, fourth down calls, two-minute drives, winning one-on-one, he's a separator, has elite twitch, really good ball skills, and is a really detailed route runner. He's been good overall."
This season, Odunze has 51 receptions for 701 yards and three touchdowns, including a two-touchdown game against the San Francisco 49ers, and has been targeted seven times in each of the last two games.
While other rookie pass catchers, such as Jacksonville's Brian Thomas Jr., New York's Malik Nabers, Arizona's Marvin Harrison Jr. and Las Vegas tight end Brock Bowers, have all taken more spotlight, Odunze has shined when given the opportunity.
