Theo Hernandez’s goal in Milan’s 3-0 win over Lecce marked a prestigious milestone for the French left-back, who became the Rossoneri’s most prolific defender, joining club legend Paolo Maldini.

Minutes after Alvaro Morata‘s opener, Theo was set up by teammate Rafael Leao and broke into the box down the left flank before firing a rocket that went in at the near post just under the crossbar to double Milan‘s advantage.

Theo Hernandez gets Maldini compliments after equalling his scoring record

Theo Hernandez’s strike against Lecce was his second this season and his 29th league goal since joining Milan in 2019, meaning he has now equalled legend Paolo Maldini as the club’s most prolific defender in Serie A.

Ironically, Maldini himself pushed for Theo’s signing from Real Madrid as then-Milan’s technical area chief, persuading the club to complete a €22.8m move that turned out to be one of the most fruitful deals made under his stint.

The left-back has showcased impressive scoring consistency since arriving at the Stadio San Siro, as he’s always netted at least four league goals in each of his seasons with a Rossoneri shirt on. He has now bagged two from six Serie A appearances and seems well on track to beat his record of seven nets in a single domestic campaign.

Theo Hernandez celebrated the milestone after his side’s win against Lecce with an Instagram post that also mentioned Paolo Maldini.

“A win and 29 goals with Milan: happy to equal my idol Paolo Maldini!! Forza Milan,” he wrote.

Maldini noticed the message and left a comment in response: “Great Theo. The little difference is that I took 25 years [to reach 29 goals], you just needed five. You’re special!”
